Windows 7: Can't join laptop to Homegroup

Can't join laptop to Homegroup

Hello:

I just connected my Toshiba Satellite L675 wirelessly to my new modem gateway (include router), Motorola SURFboard SBG6580. The laptop has Win 7 Home Premium. My desktop (Win 7 Ultimate) is connected via Ethernet cable to the modem gateway. Both can access the Internet.

I set up a Home local network from the desktop, with a password. Both computers show Homegroup in the Control Panel.

When I click on the laptop Homegroup icon, and then on Join, and I add the password, I get "Incorrect password". The password is *correct*.

What can I do to get around this problem? Thank you in advance for help.

Hans L

For a test, get rid of the password and see what happens.

Try changing the homegroup password and re-apply on both machines...

For this problem, make sure that the time and dates on both machines are correct and in sync with each other, if they are off it will cause the password incorrect problem everytime.

If that doesn't work, it might also help to connect the laptop to your network with a wired connection and see if that helps. Or you can try setting the Homegroup up on the laptop first "wired" then connect from the desktop machine.

Thanks to all of you for your help. The problem was the date/time. Who would have guessed :-) I had forgotten to check it on the laptop, but the upshot is that I learned something.

Again, thanks.

Apparently I would have guessed it .

This problem happens all the time so it was easy to solve "for me". Glad you have Homegroups working Hans.

While these types of problem look easy to solve, unless you have been working here exclusivly on Windows 7 Networking like I have been for the last two years it would be considerable more difficult to solve. Rep is earned and also appreciated.

And now, I've got stuck again (on an issue that I have working on two other computers). Would you please take a look at "Can map folder, but not drag files to it" in this forum.

Thanks!
