Windows 7: UNBEARABLY Slow File sharing

UNBEARABLY Slow File sharing

I have 3 computers connected via LAN that share files, mostly Microsoft Word files. File sizes range from a few KBs to a couple hundred Kbs but nothing huge. All 3 computers are brand new as of less than 3 months from Dell. Every time I open a shared file it takes so long to open; on average 1-2 minutes depending on the size. If I make changes and save the file that also takes a long time. Before I upgraded to the new computers I was using Windows XP Pro on two computers and Windows 2000 on one computer and never had issues sharing files at such slow speeds. I even purchased a new router, went from a Linksys to a Netgear. I surf the internet at the blink of an eye and play my Xbox 360 online with no lags at all. I've talked to Dell and they have no idea what the problem is and same goes with Microsoft. I had to pay $60 to Microsoft for tech support! 3 hours of my Saturday and no results from them. I've searched numerous articles and forums and many people have had similar issues and some have had them fixed by tweaking certain settings. None of which have seemed to work for me. Please, if anybody can help I would really, really appreciate it since these computers are for my business and waiting around slows me down tremendously. Here's is my setup, all 3 computers are exactly the same:

Computer:
Dell Vostro 220
Windows 7 Professional 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93GHz
3 GB of RAM

Network Card:
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (updated to current driver according to Dell's website)

Router:
Netgear WNDR3700
All computers are wired, no wireless.

AV Software:
Webroot Spyspweeper (updated to current version)

Thank you again for any help anybody can provide!!!

I'm glad you listed your A/V because that is the most likely cause of the problem. You may need to disable or uninstall your A/V to fix this problem.

Chev65, you are a genius! The new version of Spysweeper has a setting that scans shared files. Turn off that setting, check out the file sharing and instant satisfaction! Funny thing is if you disable this setting it actually turns the entire program off. Shame on Webroot I guess?? A friend of mine told be Microsoft Security Essentials is really good and it's a free download anyway. If you have any other recommendations for reliable AV software that won't cause this problem that would be great.

Thanks a million!

Have you ever tried to disable any AV you have on BOTH involved machines ?
Otherwise every document would be scanned twice with every access.

I don't like Webroot Spysweepeer...My in law was fooled into buying that POS and I found out when I was called in to remove all the nasties, Spysweeper let through.

We have been using Spysweeper for quite some time and were pleased with the results. Very few instances of virues, spyware, etc. But they recently updated their software, interface and a bunch of other stuff last time I renewed and I kind of got 'irked' by it. Now this gave me all the more reason to part ways.

Not really genius but highly suspecious of just about any real time A/V software's due to seeing so many of them cause problems with Windows 7.

Msoft security Essentials is great and won't cause any problems.

Glad that you are up and running Marcod.

Problem with file copying adversely affecting media/file sharing & WMC
WMC recording/playback and media/file sharing seems to work fine until I go to copy a file between drives, where one of those drives is currently using some of its i/o bandwidth to do media. The copy hogs the i/o bandwidth, doing nasty things to the real-time needs. How do I permanently tell...
