I recently started using Live Mesh Sync 2011 from Microsoft. It's free, and gives me 5 GB of storage space to sync between any number of computers, and 25 GB of free storage online overall.

Sounds like a corrupt install, or that your firewall is blocking the app. You could also try uninstalling everything related to Live Essentials 2011 and reinstalling it.

Would a simple sync program like Allway Sync work?

I used to use Dropbox, but prefer Live Mesh. However, if that doesn't work, give DropBox a try.
