No "bangs" or anything next to it, right ?? If it looks normal, like other hardware does in Device Manager, then Windows is happy with it.
You say you get no light at the NIC when you plug it in and Windows says theirs no connection, right ??
You have a NIC with a physical layer problem. In simple terms, just a bad NIC.
Best fix is to disable it in the BIOS and install a replacement. You should be able to pick one up cheap. You might even ask around your friends and get one for nothing.
I have several I don't need and would be glad to give you one if you're close by.
I've experienced the wrong driver for a device give no symptoms at all through device manager, yet the device not work.No "bangs" or anything next to it, right ?? If it looks normal, like other hardware does in Device Manager, then Windows is happy with it.
All he did was reinstall windows (on an ssd drive). Major coincedence if the card actually failed while he did that. You have a NIC with a physical layer problem. In simple terms, just a bad NIC.
I'd suggest that's absolutely the last troubleshooting step.Best fix is to disable it in the BIOS and install a replacement. You should be able to pick one up cheap. You might even ask around your friends and get one for nothing.
Try this out first maybe:
Load system defaults in bios
Verify adapter is enabled (if onboard)
Reinstall windows
Fully update with windows updates
Do NOT load asus drivers yet!
Post back with status of devices under device manager tab.
Do you need Lan or 1394 connection for you wired internet.
My Asus board driver/LAN hardware is the same as yours.
Mine uses LAN but when I installed the driver the LAN was disabled and Ethrnet 1394 was enabled. I disabled the 1394 and enabled LAN and it went to working.
Start> Control Panel> Network and Sharing Center
Click the Change Adapter in left column circled in yellow.
If the Realtek device is not showing then the LAN adapter isn't being recognized or the driver is not installed or installed improperly.
If it is disabled right click on it then click enable.
Let me know what you find.

answers what in the affirmative? I just left a series of steps for him to take of which is only half (or so) of the total process I envisioned...If he answer in the affirmative, he has a bad NIC. Drivers can't fix a physical layer problem.
I had the feeling inappropriate drivers were installed. I felt it was a larger leap to assume the trouble exists in the physical layer and to skip the steps to verify appropriate drivers were installed before suggesting new hardware wasn't the best direction. Everything you advised wasn't poor advice necessarily, just possibly premature. Just my $.02.
Regardless, I think Hopalong has better insight into this
@Ageeb
