Windows 7: Wired Network Connection Problem

Wired Network Connection Problem

Good Afternoon,

I am running a home network and the computer in question is Windows 7-32 bit Dell desktop connected to the netword via CAT-5 cable. Other wireless computers reside on the network, too.

For the past several days, it has been dropping its connection to the Internet, sometimes spontaneously and always on reboot. When I go to the Network & Settings page after the connection drop, I see (attached) two networks. My network and a public network, so "multiple networks" appears on the network map.

To regain my connection to the Internet, I have to go to "Adapter Settings," disable the LAN connection and then re-enable it. That gets me back to the Internet, but doing this several times a day is no fun.

I tried drect connecting my cable modem to the computer, avoiding the router, and all that appeared was a Public Network I could not seem to connect to.

Can anyone offer some insights as to what is going on with my computer and how I can resolve it? The only changes to the system in the past week were the MS updates installed automatically.

Help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi DougR,

Try to do a Power Cycle.
How to Power Cycle (Restart) your Internet Modem & Router

I'd highly recommend a firmware update of your router if you have not done it yet. You may obtain/download from the manufacturer's site. To install the new firmware, use a wired connection.

Do you by any chance have iTunes installed. If so, you're probably running a network created by Bonjour. Disable Bonjour in Services.

With fingers crossed, I think my problem is fixed

Thanks for your suggestion on Bonjour. I don't have iTunes installed on the problem PC, but I did reinstall Adobe Creative Suite 3 several weeks ago and that does include Bonjour.

I was unable to disable the Bonjour service in task manager, but did find instructions on how to rename the DLL, reboot and then delete the Bonjour folder.

I've restarted the PC a couple of times and the network connection held. Let's hope it stays that way.

Thanks, very much, for your insights and help.

2XG, thanks for your suggestion. Actually, I did the Power Start routine yesterday. I always enjoy crawling under my computer table to find my modem!

I'm currently useing a Linksys G router and want to upgrade to an N series, so this issue is as good an excuse as any to buy one.

Thanks for your reply.
