before you replied i went on the xp laptop and followed the xp help files and set up a connection but, i have a problem. my win 7 desktop identifies it as a music media server. i have a music media server program on the xp (tversity) and it is identified as "xxxx-xxxx:Tversity Media Server"
also, on a liitle different subject. on the xp laptop i tried to select a shared file from the win 7 desktop to use in a program but, it would not let me do it. any ideas?

Works fine for me. Just google for "windows 7 xp file sharing" and you'll find a ton of links about it.
