Can't connect to certain wireless networks

Help! My laptop is fairly new (6 months old) and I've had no trouble connecting to my home network or wi-fi hotspots, but if I go to my fiance's house or my brother's house, I can't connect. They both have secured networks, but I don't even get prompted to enter a network key/password - it just says "Unable to connect to this network." I've tried EVERY SINGLE form of troubleshooting possible. Didn't have this problem with my old laptop, which had XP on it, so I'm attributing the issue to Windows 7. Anyone out there have the same problem or know how to fix it?? Thanks.

What encryption protocol is being used at your fiance's and brothers house. Win 7 doesnt support some of the older methods.

I'm not sure - I'm going to my brother's tomorrow so I will find out. If it is older, does that mean I will never be able to connect to it? Or is there some other way to connect?

This really depends on what he is using for security and encryption, find out if he's using WEP,WPA or WPA2 and also if he's using TKIP or AES encryption, you will also need the SSID and the password. You should be able to connect once you set up the connection with the right info.

Once you have that info you can set up the wireless account by choosing to set up a new wireless connection manually then define those exact settings when you set up the connection.
