New laptop - Wireless hits and misses

we have 2 new HP laptops and one won't stay connected to the wireless network.

My dad is a cable guy and we have the laptop working through an ethernet wire. If we unhook the cable sometimes the internet stays connected and sometimes it stops working. We even connected it to our network to share files. It's just the wireless that comes and goes.

Are they in the same place? Does the connection only drop out at certain locations?
Any other wireless devices (phone for example) in between the laptop and the access point?

Yes the 2 new laptops are in the same room together as well as with the router. One laptop has no internet issues while the other one does.

Connection has hit and miss 20 minutes after connecting to up to 40+ minutes. It runs with the ethernet plugged in fine. The internet just shuts off and says "unable to connect."

No, no other wireless devices near by.

rockergal, open your network connection properties (where you set IP address), in that window, set it to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"

I did this and it was already checked in case that matters

Your confused here, the security would be WEP not the encryption and you do not want to leave your connection open for any reason. WEP is an outdated security standard.

You would be far better off using WPA2-PSK security along with AES encryption, Windows likes to use these settings. Use those settings in your router when you set up the connection then use the manual wireless set up in Windows 7 and use those same settings "not mixed". Don't forget to make a security key "password" and of course the SSID "name of network".

If your drivers came with a wireless connection manager you should go to add-remove programs and remove it, otherwise it will fight with the Win7 wireless connection manager.

My wireless router has been set up for a few years and working perfectly. These are two new windows 7 laptops that we got yesterday that are now hitting and missing with the internet.

That is the way it's listed in the wireless network properties. If i change those settings on my 2 new windows 7 laptops, will it affect the other laptops on the router that are working fine? I don't want to change the router if I can help it because everything else is working fine and has been working fine for a few year.

I already have a security key password set and SSID name of network. Our router has been working fine for the past 4+ years. Those two settings I quoted is how they are listed in my new win 7 laptops wireless network properties.

We set up our internet connected at the first start up fine on both and even attached to the file sharing to our other computers/External hard drives. It's just it hits and misses with logging on.

as of right now, both have been kicked off and then after running the trouble shoot thing, was unable to be fixed but then a little later they both reattached to the internet on their own. It hits and misses.

Then configure your network connection in the bottom-right System Tray using Windows 7's built-in superior connection manager, since HP's adds 30 second to boot time and hogs CPU. Troubleshooting with MSCONFIG

What does this mean "use the built in win 7's superior connection manager?" Is the HP manager that little icon in the bottom right task manager that I click 'connect' to the internet?

If I used the windows built in one, would I have a little icon in the task bar to be able to click connect/troubleshoot, etc?

Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n I have not tried to update the driver until someone tells me it's the right thing to do. I'm not wanting to make more trouble, I just want to get my two laptops to connect without this hit and miss stuff.

My other brand new laptop has realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller has this listed yet they are the same brand of computer. Is this normal? shouldn't they be matching? It's the realtek one that is having the connecting issue the most. Neither have been updated but I want someone to tell me it's safe to update as I don't want to mess anything up.
