Ip doesnt have valid configuration, help!?!!?

my dad recently bought me an HP laptop for christmas. brand new, had never been used. it worked wonderfully up until we tried to connect it to the internet. it told me to reset my router, which i did and it took me through a bunch of troubleshooting guides. it kept telling me at the end of all of the troubleshooting that the connection was "unauthorized" and that i didn't have a valid ip configuration. however my father has a toshiba laptop and his connects to the internet fine. he uses linksys.

so he called HP and spent hours on the phone with them and they came to the conclusion that there must have been something internally wrong with the computer and that it was defected. so today we returned it, got our money back, and bought an ACER laptop. the lady at the customer service counter told us she had problems with her HP and said we should probably try a different brand. so we bought the acer aspire laptop and its having the same problem. it wont connect because of the IP address configuration. we've literally done everything.

the only difference between our laptops besides the brand is that his is windows vista and mine is the new windows 7. has anyone else had a similar problem and knows how to repair it?

please leave any information below.

i assume this isn't wireless - have you tried a different port on the router?

Hi Rachellynnnn, welcome to Sevenforums.

Are you trying this on your wired or wireless connection?
If its on the wired, Open Control panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings
Then right click on the network connection and open properties.
Open the properties for IPv4. Are obtain IP and obtain DNS both set to automatic? They should be.
If you have IPv6 enabled, check that out too.

Let us know how you get on.
If it still fails, then it might have to do with the router.
Also, what is the model numbers for the laptop and router?

Ok, just making sure we've covered that base.
It may be the router has MAC filtering which prevents any unauthorised machines to connect.
When you tried to connect wirelessly, did it prompt you for a security passkey or code?

nope, it doesnt have a security code. it connects to the linksys itself, but i guess because it 'unauthorized' it wont connect to the actual internet. it looks like this

my pc --> unidentified network x internet

theres like a big red x and when i click on it thats when it takes me through all the troubleshooting and such and thats how it brings me to the unidentified IP thing.

Please try this for me, go to start run then type in cmd. Then type in "ipconfig" with out the "". It should show information like this.

Windows IP Configuration

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : removed
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.24
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Check to see if Default Gateway looks like this
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
or this
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
if it has 192.168.1.1 or something near that then it should work but if it does not you need to set up a network connection on the laptop it's self
