Networking issue - Win7 printer, XP remote machines

I hope people don't mind my "cross-posting" Printer plugged into Win7 box - how to print from remote XP machine? - which I put in the devices forum yesterday, but the solution might be more a networking issue.

I am not with my computers right now so can't test it, but perhaps Sharing files and printers with different versions of Windows - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows solves my problem.

    Summarizing the problem:

    • I have a computer that used to run Windows XP 32 bit
    • I upgraded it this week to Windows 7 64 bit
    • This machine has a printer USB connected to it
    • Prior to the upgrade, all the other Windows 7 and XP computers in my house could remotely print to that printer
    • Now only the other Windows 7 computer in the house can remotely print to it - none of the XPs can
    • Yes, the printer has been shared

A wrinkle I discovered last night is that from one of the XP computers, I CAN print remotely, from my account on that computer with the same user id and password as on the Win7 computer that has the printer attached. But from the same remote XP computer, different account, I can "see" the printer, but stuff just builds up in the print queue without printing and without error messages.

    What I want is:

    • EVERY computer in the house (Win7 box connected to the printer, plus remote Win7 and XP machines) can print
    • Accomplish this WITHOUT having to set up each remote computer with an account with the same username and password as I use on my Win7 computer

    Thanks in advance

in the sharing properties of the printer, add the "Everyone" group with print and manage print jobs checked.

Not sure where/how to do this - right-click printer (in Windows 7) and pick properties and a seven-tab dialog box comes up. From the "sharing" tab I do not see any ability to add groups, nor do I see a "manage print jobs."

The options will be on the printer, through devices and printers.

This tutorial has screenshots that will help explain it better than I can.

Wow, that is heavy-duty (a good thing!) - I am still not with my computers, but that tutorial looks like it has everything I need to do. Thanks a lot.

Half way down the page it will get into the "permissions" and sharing stuff. Should be helpful.

    Solved!

By following the steps in How to Enable Printer & File Sharing between Windows 7 and Windows XP | Windows 7 I was able to solve my problem. Thanks.

I have a much more minor problem with file sharing that I'll start a new thread on momentarily.
