XP laptop does not connect to Win 7 network

    Hello:

I'm new to laptops, otherwise computer-literate. I have worked for more than a day, but can't figure this one out.

    I have a Win 7, 64-bit Toshiba, and a Motorola SURFboard®
SBG6580 Series Wi-Fi Cable Modem Gateway. Works! Laptop connects seamlessly to the Motorola wirelsee network.

Now, a friend has a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an XP operating system and a wireless card. It will connect to an unprotected network in the area, but it refuses to connect to my Motorola wireless network (in the same apartment).

I had a homegroup, but deleted it. It is possible that I have, by mistake, deleted the network key ("password"), so, when a write it in from the Dell, I believe it should work, but it does not. And I can for the life of me not remember how to delete and reset the Network Key.

Any help would be appreciated, since I am so tired (3 days driving long shifts from Cleveland, Ohio, to Boca Raton, Florida, and getting stuck behind accidents a few times).

    Thanks,

    Hans L

    Hey Hans
I found the below info on another forum maybe it will work for you also.

On the Windows 7 laptop that is connected wirelessly to the network you are trying to get the WEP key for, go to Start -> in the search box, type in Manage Wireless Networks and press enter.

Find the network you are trying to get the WEP key for, double click that network, go to the Security tab, and then check the Show Characters box.

Sparkie, thanks a lot. Now I know that the password was changed inadvertently. However I cannot remember how/where to change it. I am still settling in, getting bagels and stuff

I'll try to figure it out, but if you know, please let me know.

    Best regards,

Just wanted to tell that I now got my friend's computer to connect to my network at computer startup. Still looking for where to reset the password.

And, finally, after a good night' sleep and a calm morning, I was able to find the place in the modem/router firmware where the network key is changed.

    Regards,
