    Only Partially Connected to Internet

(I don' know where this belongs, having not previously encountered the problem.)

I noted early today that SuperAntiSpyware would not update, saying the firewall was at fault; analyzed that, did not fix the problem.

After rebooting, I got a message about Protexis Licensing Service having crashed, needing to be updated, and I tried to download the file. However, apparently Free Download Manager cannot connect. This Service is showing as running in Control Panel/Services.

I also noted that AllMyBooks will not contact the Internet; it says to check my Internet settings.

Found link to the file through a search here, downloaded and ran file, no help. I'll log off, reboot, see if anything has been fixed.
[EDIT] A search here found me the link to the file, which I ran, but which did no good. I'll log off, reboot, see if that fixes the problem.

In addition to rebooting, I've restarted the Protexis Service, I've unplugged the modem and the router, to no avail.

    Solution(s)?

you could have a rogue DHCP problem, what is your setup?

    also try

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    ipconfig /flush dns

try ping 192.168.1.1 and see if you get a reply from your router, unless you changed its address

I don't even know what a DHCP setup might be.

I entered your first three suggestions in the search box at the bottom of the Start button; a few things seemed to happen.

I tried your ping address, which timed out.

After rebooting, I found that I still cannot connect. My quick reading of a link on these forums about the Protexis licensing service indicates that some programs use it, and won't run without it. While the computer was rebooting, I recall having received a similar message from the Windows 7 Action Center some time ago, and I then was able to download and run the installer.

I now have two versions of the licensing service, both running. Stopped one, then the other, etc., still no connection for updating SuperAntiSpyware, AllMyBooks won't connect to on-line databases, and Windows7 Help complains that I'm not connected.

I certainly appreciate your effort to assist me (even if it did take a terrible long time for you to reply...).

I continue to have no idea, something at which I am truly an expert!

I was running some of the built-in Windows 7 troubleshooting programs, and found a message that "More than one device is sharing network address translation"--at least that is how I translate my scribbled note. The troubleshooter said that it could not fix the problem.

Is this meaningful? If so, what do I need to do to fix it, given that the troubleshooter was of no assistance about doing so?

(I see that this thread has been moved to the Network & Sharing forum, which is certainly fine: As I wrote originally, as I have no idea what is causing the problem, I had no idea where to post my request for assistance.)

[EDIT] I forgot to mention that I could update SuperAntiSpyware through the Task Bar icon as late as around 1700 local yesterday. AllMyBooks was working around that late Saturday; no time to use it yesterday. Also, so far, I've run a scan using Avast!, which reported no problems. Super did it usual scan yesterday morning, reported no problems. I'll run it again, but as this appears to be a networking problem rather than a rogue file, I don't expect to find anything amis..

    Hi,

Were you able to get a ping reply from your router at the adddress above? It sounds to me as if your PC cannot even see the router - is that correct?

    Regards,

I don't think so: The modem goes through the router and then to the PC, and I'm able to use Firefox and Thunderbird without any problem. Granted that my attempt to ping that address got nothing but a timeout, but then, as I think I've made clear, I really have little understanding of what this is all about: I tend to be software oriented, not hardware oriented. (I recall some sort of error from the router software when I installed the router, so I chose a different choice from the menu. Everything worked that way, even though it was not supposed to, and Linksys support was of no help, so I have just left it alone for a year or more.)

    OK.

Have you tried updating SuperAntiSpyware again? Do you use Windows Firewall?

Yes, but find that I have to download the update file and install it manually; still cannot access it through the Task Bar icon, nor do the other programs I've reported work, etc.

I don't usually use the Windows Firewall, but when I first encountered the Super problem, I disabled Comodo Firewall, tried accessing Super that way, started Windows firewall, still no success.

And, an apology: I finally remembered what the PSI License is, and it has, most likely, nothing to do with the Internet problem: This is a copy protection program that certain Corel programs insert when the programs are installed. I believe I got this when I downloaded a free copy of an expired version of Corel Paint Shop X, a program that well serves my needs.

[More information] Avast! just auto-updated, so not everything is bad.
[More "More Information"] Turned off DSL modem, connected via dial-up, everything that I've so far found not to work with DSL works with dial-up.
