how to share files between W7 and Ubuntu 9.10

I have recently bought a new desk top PC running W7, I can't get file sharing to work.

I have tried setting everything i can find in relation to file sharing to "Yes" and disabled the password for "HOMEGEOUP" etc. but still get asked for a password from my Ubuntu laptop. i have managed to get things working in reverse in that i can access files from the laptop with the Desk top.

I have managed in the past with no problems on my old PC that was running XP, 7 has such a different networking set up than what i have been used to. If anybody could point me in the right direction to enable my W7 to fileshare to my ubuntu laptop i would really appreciate it.

Neil Hi and welcome

I am a bit confused. In one spot you say Homegroup, and another workgroup. Homegroup uses IPv6 and is meant for win 7 networks only. Workgroup uses IPv4 and uses IPv4. Workgroup doesnt need to have a password Homegroup requires one.

I would suggest creating a new network connection in win 7 using "workgroup" and test it.

Homegroup has been know to have sharing and connectivity issues on some networks

Nope, no luck. i have been reading tutorials and forum answers and nothing seems to be opening any doors for me, I have posted the same question over in the Ubuntu forum too, no luck there either.

I have never had this difficulty in the past, and have easily shared files from my old XP box to this laptop.

I did as suggested and switched off "HOMEGROUP" and changed my network type to "WORK Workgroup" then set the share options from certain folders to "everyone" , i disabled the windows firewalls and yet it still won't share its files on the network in my house. Do i need a degree in computing to get W7 file sharing????

it is easy on every other computer/OP system i have ever used. I am rapidly becoming Peed off. ....Oh, and i didn't mention "HOMEGROUP" and "WORKGROUP" in my first post. the screenshot from my laptop showed the window pop up with "WORKGROUP" already auto-completed in the box provided by default.

Why is file sharing so sodding difficult with W7 ?????????? In windows XP all that is required is to simply enable it by following the onscreen instructions and setting permissions in the folders you wish to share. There were no confusing stuff like a "HOMEGROUP" which sounds like it would be the correct option for sharing files on a home network, but apparently only shares to other W7 computers.

There are supposed to be some updates for Ubuntu that makes it work with Windows 7, if those don't work you can try changing the NTLM compatiblity levels and the encryption levels on the Win7 machine. It might also help to uninstall the Windows live sign in assistant.

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Send LM & NTLM responses

Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption "uncheck"

I apologise for my wee rant earlier, I was just getting a little frustrated.

Thanks for your reply , I will have a go at doing what you suggest, and see if it yields any results for me.

Somebody over in the ubuntu forum also had a similar issue and said that it may be a bug in SAMBA that they thought had not been addressed yet. They overcame it by uninstalling "windows live essentials" .

another posted a link to this thread which i think is pretty much what you are saying, but correct me if that is wrong. have a read and see if you think it makes sense.

There seems to be another way to fix this using the bugzilla link in the link that you just posted.

My info came from a different source and was confirmed to fix the problem also so take your pick I guess, hopefully one of them will work for you.

I will just pick my way through now that i am armed with the information.
