Can someone please tell me how many pc's can be setup on a wired Home Network without running a dedicated server machine?
Can anyone please tell me how many (maximum) pc's I can setup on a home network without running a dedicated server. Trying to setup a network at home without going to the expense of putting in a dedicated server machine. Network is to be wired.
Sory I am no fundi on this. I have 5 pc's. My Modem has 5 ports coming off it. What other hardware would I require? Thnx
How are the 5 ports on you modem marked as? You may need another hub to do all 5 of your computers if only 4 ports on the modem are sharing ports.
EDIT: What is the make & model of your modem ?
Router ports are numbered 1 to 5. Netgear wi fi router
You should be able to connect all 5 computers via Cat5 ethernet cables if each computer has an ethernet port or ethernet card in it. Then you will have to set up a workgroup & sharing on each computer. If you have mixed computers, win7 , Vista, XP, win98_SE, make sure you use a work network & NOT win7 HomeGroup.
I'm going to say that maybe only four ports are active and useful. Some of those home routers have a pair of ports at the end that are either a standard, or an uplink...but you can only use one or the other. Either way, you'll need switches to add as many ports as you need. Unless your router can do multiple subnets, you are probably limited to 254 devices, but you'd need some very expensive switches to get that high.
For the record, having a server or not has nothing to do with your question, as you would still need like network ports to connect all the computers, even if you already had a server.
