Stll discovered on the Network even after disabling service FDResPub

I have stopped and disabled the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" in services.msc, yet my computer continues to be discovered on the network, with access to all shared files etc... I have restarted the PC several times and tried starting/stopping/re-disabling twice as well. I know it was working properly (invisible on the network) yesterday. How is this possible?

    Hello sleepless, :)

Double check to see if this below may help:

    1. Set network location type to "Public".
Network Location - Set as Home, Work, or Public Network

    2. Turn off network discovery.
Network Discovery - Turn On or Off in Windows 7

    3. Turn off Public folder sharing.
Public Folder Sharing - Turn On or Off in Windows 7

    4. Make sure anything set to share has been set to "Stop sharing".
File Sharing - "Share with" & "Stop Sharing" in Windows 8

    5. Have the workgroup name different than the other PCs so it's not joined to it.

Thanks for the reply but I'm confused. Shouldn't disabling the service be enough? It was working yesterday fine. I'm not willing to disable everything on my PC like you're suggesting. Normally, with the service disabled I still have access to the network, just my PC is not discovered on the network. This means I still have access to files from my local server. So this is not a sharing issue. I'm not wanting to disconnect from the network. I just want to continue to have the ability to be 'hidden' while I'm on it.

Also, what does this service do exactly, if everything now functions the same when its disabled?

I'd at least turn off network discovery in addition to stopping and disabling the service.

    Thanks for the reply.
Again, won't that prevent me from connecting to the local server? Isn't this option essentially the opposite of what I was asking? As pointed out in other forums:
"Turning off network discovery on your PC will just stop you from seeing other PC's on the network, not the other way around."
What I want is simply to be hidden while connected to it. It really suprises me that this request is so unfamiliar to people. If you share a home with others who you don't neccessarily think it's thier business to know exactly what you're up to at all times, this would seem like a valid request. To be 'hidden' while having access to a local server.

So far I've only found these "solutions":

    1. Disabling the "Function Discovery Resource Publication" service as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x8mSF6lIgs
The result was sometimes hidden, sometimes visible. My longshot guess is that when a device I've shared with in the past (server included) is connected, it discovers my pc, which then makes it visible to all. Currently I'm hidden while the server (HTPC as seen in the original post) is not connected.

    2. Entering the command "net config server /hidden:yes" in the command prompt (elevated):
Recommended in several forums but resulted in no change.

    I haven't tried this yet:

    3. "To prevent the unwanted browsing feature, run services.msc and find the service called "Server" and Stop it. Then right click on it and change its startup setting to Disabled. This will prevent someone from browsing files on that machine. Yet that machine will be able to browse files and print from other servers in the office."

    Thoughts?

But sleepless you "share a home" and also apparently a central server, and your home-mates know you have a PC that connects to the Server, so....why are you concerned if another can see your PC on the network? They already can see the glow from your room and know you are up in the middle of the night.

It seems to me you need only to set-up your shares such that no one else has access to your PC. Are you the network sysadmin? Responsible for the server?

Try something like Comodo Firewall in stealth mode - that should give you privacy when set up correctly, it is capable of making a PC invisible to others even if they know you're there and they have your IP address

It might be helpful to know who is the administrator of the workstation and the home server. Someone else might of changed the settings.

    Thanks folks,

So today when I got up and turned on my laptop, I was hidden and could see one other user on the network. After turning on the server, I expected my PC to be discovered but it wasn't. This makes me happy because if people think I'm still sleeping, I won't be disturbed. (space in AM= ) Plus I still had full access. I'm admin so no changes to the server that I'm aware of. Some time later, I noticed the server is hidden from me. I still have access if I enter the location of a file/folder, and others on the network are still visible to me, but the server is hidden from the network folder now. This is strange so I'm gonna see if I can figure this out.
