Internet only goes Fast when Downloading

    Hi there,
I'm having a REALLY strange problem.
    Ok, so here goes:

My internet, only goes fast when i am downloading something in Flashget.
Even if flashget is consuming 800 KBs (Everything ) /s the internet gets really fast. But when i'm not downloading, it is really slow like 15s to open up only google. And that happens with all the 4 PCs on my home.

What the hell is going on ? :P
I mean, it should go slower when downloading, not faster.

OBS: Could it be because of the High Bandwith that Flashget takes?

    Thanks,
    Alex.

you're saying that the 4 PC's on your home network are doing this. Unless they are all running Windows 7 and the same build, it seems to be an ISP issue.

Hey alex Im assuming you have cable for your isp. If you have 8Mb down your up is probably 800Kb up. the important thing is the latency. Its always faster down than it is up.
What you need to do assuming everything on your system is ok is to run something called a traceroute. It traces the path to a site (like msn.com) and how long each stop along the way is taking. traceroute is a small utility you can find online and its usually free. I happen to use a utility called ping-probe (also free) and gives results that look like the picture.

Hope this helps and feel free to Pm me if you need more

    Hope this helped

Hey Alex have you ran a search on google about the program Flashget? I did and came up with some stuff saying it calls home alot which could be slowing down your internet on all your boxes. Maybe look at that by uninstalling and then see how the speed in your home net is. good luck to you. lm

2 of the PCs are running Windows 7, one 7100 and the other 7137, and the other ones are running XP Professional.

They say you're getting 8 down. have you tried speakeasy.net for a neutral number

ASDL is way faster than dial up but is dependant on how far from the phone company you are. did it seem faster at 1 time and now it isn't?

If you want to do a speed test, head over to : Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

There you can see if there's a problem with your ADSL speed and if there's a lot of latency to the selected server.
