Internet Connection Sharing Problem

Hey guys

I'm looking for some help from someone with some detailed insight into Windows 7 ICS problems. My issues is pretty specific and strange.

I have a wireless modem in my main PC, which is connected, wirelessly, to a wireless signal to achieve internet.

I have this PC connected by ethernet to a NETGEAR N-300 wireless router. This router then creates a private LAN, to which I have connected a second PC (wired) and my Android smartphone (wireless).

I use internet connection sharing on my main PC to push the internet out to the private LAN.

On my second PC I specify static IP's within the subnet of the private network generated by the router, using the IP of the main PC on that network as the default gateway.

Now here's the thing... my second PC has both Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on it. In Windows 7 I can use the internet just fine. Everything seems to work OK, and the connection is solid.

However, in both Ubuntu on this machine (with an identical networking configuration) and on my Android handset wirelessly connecting to the same network with an identical networking configuration (albeit a different IP of course) I have no connection to the internet. I do not understand why.

Some extra notes : On both the second PC (in both OS's) and my Android device I can see shared network drives on the main PC without issue.

There is no difference in the way the networking is configured on the second PC in Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Both connect successfully.

On the main PC the ethernet device describes it's connection as an unidentified network.

I have not configured a homegroup or a domain or any such thing.

I cannot use a proxy server because I need more than just HTTP to be shared to the other devices.

I've thought about using NAT to solve this, but I'll be honest and say I do not know how to configure it.

Yes, my network has to be configured this way, so any suggestions along the lines of "why don't you just change x for y, or buy a new z" are not going to help.

So, anyone have any insight into this at all ? It's frustrating the hell out of me, and I'm sure it must be something simple. I genuinely need both the Ubuntu installation and my Android handset to have full internet access, and it has to be configured the way it currently is.

Any help greatly appreciated, since I'm going a little nuts over this.

Many thanks in advance.

...Jess

I'll take a crack at it. Two questions first for me for clarification. Is PC one with Windows 7 and a single boot OS? Is PC 2 with windows 7 and is a dual boot OS?

In so far as an answer; in the Ubuntu Os, have you checked the configuration of your router, specifically the MAC Clone Service, make sure it's enabled and then click the clone tab.

I'm not familiar with dual booting but I'm guessing you have to setup router configurations within each OS. It just a hunch.

Hey. Thanks for replying man.

To answer your questions... The main PC has Windows 7 only and never drops out. This is the one with ICS enabled. The second PC dual boots between Windows and Ubuntu.

I'm interested in your MAC address idea. I was under the impression that the NIC hardware sends the MAC address to the OS, right ? Therefore the MAC address would be the same in both Windows and Linux ?

I will check the router configuration, but I haven't found anything which leapt out at me as the cause. But as I say I will check.

Any ideas appreciated. And thanks again.
