wireless connection issues with win7 help PLZ!!!??

i just got a new computer with windows 7 home premium on it and i get my internet through a wireless connection via a netgear WG111v3 USB wireless adapter. the adapter was working fine with my old computer which was running on XP sp3. but now i've been having issues with staying connected. my connection keeps dropping for no obvious reason, and when its not dropping its varying in connection speed. one minute any site will load instantly, a couple minutes later i have to wait several minutes for a site to load only to get a "couldn't find server" message or other error messages. it's really quite annoying to pay for high speed internet and to be having these issues.

i've scoured the web, i've tried everything i can think of. so far i've...

-tried different channels through the router
    -reset the router
    -reset the modem
-tried letting windows set up the software onlly to be told windows couldn't set up the drivers, and to use the installation cd
-i've turned off the power saving settings for all USB ports etc
-i've checked that all the drivers are up to date, and they are. i just bought this adapter a few months ago and it even states on the box "compatible with windows 7"

basically i've tried every obvious solution and to no avail. i had an issue before where i would connect to my SSID, and there was another SSID called NG_Profile that was exactly the same as mine, and they were both set to "Connect whenever network is in range" so i thought maybe it was going back and forth trying to connect to them both since they were the same and both always in reach. so i disabled that option, and still nothing. i've now rid myself of the NG_Profile, but my connections still shotty.

i'm only maybe 10 feet from the router. my connection always comes back but its almost pointless because it always slows back down and then disconnects again.

is there anything i can do for this? maybe a default windows 7 setting i need to change or something? i have a feeling its a simple fix that i just haven't thought of or discovered yet. please help!? this is driving me insane, it literally has my blood pressure up ha

EDIT: i read your sticky, i've tried the batch file, and it worked for maybe 15 seconds XD, now my connection is still going in and out. i'm trying to attach the file you've requested as well but its not letting me attach anything :/

Do you have another laptop that you could bring in to test and see that your router/access point isn't going bad? If someone else brings in a laptop, and has no problems staying connected, then I'd say it's probably a defective usb dongle.

also, just a side note: after you did the reset on the routers and modems, you did set them up the same as how they were prior to being reset, correct?

yeah i reset everything back to how it was. it all just started happening maybe a week ago. originally what happened was we had a storm and it knocked out the power and despite having everything plugged into my surge protector, it somehow still managed to fry the power supply, which is why i'm wondering if perhaps it damaged the wireless adapter too, although it still works perfectly at times. i'd really hate to waste the money on buying a new adapter if its just a wrong setting or something though, which is why i'm trying to see if there's anything that anyone knows of that may be causing this. from the way it looks a lot of people have been having problems with this so i really don't think its the adapter :/

The adapter is fully compatible with windows 7, so you should have no issues there. Have you tested the adapter on a different computer?

i haven't since the issue started because it had been working completely fine on my old computer not even a week before this. sometimes i have no issues at all, like in the last hour i've been home i haven't had a single issue. whereas last night i couldn't even type the original post and post it before the internet would go out again.

I had that issue with my laptop several years back. I ended up doing a complete flush of all the ipconfig and renewing all of it, that seemed to fix the issue.

as in what the batch file posted with the sticky on this topic does? because i tried doing that and it didn't seem to work. however i'll try that if it starts acting up again...like i said, for the moment its behaving so i'm not going to tempt fate by messing with anything right now haha. to do the dnsflush is it just opening up cmd and putting ipconfig/dnsflush ?

    ipconfig

    /flushdns

    /registerdns

    /release_all

    /renew_all

I'm questioning if it would help you, but here's the commands he was referring to:

(please note, you'll want to run an elevated cmd prompt. Right click on "run" and select "run as administrator")
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /all

That will release your ip address, flush your dns, renew your ip address, register new dns, and display all settings. Do you have another machine you could use for testing? That would really quickly and easily lead us to the solution.
