    error 651

I have a network setup on my Belkin router with a couple of XP Home machines and one Win 7 Ultimate x64. Works fine. Now my Sister is visiting me with her Eeepc, 1015PE, Win 7 starter x32 and I can not get her connected. I get error 651. When I look this up I see a recommendation to upgrade my router firmware. This I will not do lightly for fear of "bricking" another router.
    Been there, done that.

I do not see where this is necessary anyway as my Win 7 Ultimate works OK.

I can not get this Win Starter machine connected wireless (hotel style) or wired. Error 651 all the time.
Can not connect to router with HTTP:// 192.168.2.1
as I do with the other computers. I have stumbled around and changed the unknown network to MSHOME as on the other computers but still have the X between the network and the internet. I have not set up Win 7 Homegroup as I believe that would not allow me to connect to my XP computers.

My Sister did not bring her installation disks with her
so I will try to reload a NIC driver from some other source as my next step. As soon as I discover her NIC model.

Another piece of info. I have another Eeepc with XP home connecting fine.

After trying a couple of days I am ready for help from my fellow enthusiasts....... Please

    Hi cyanna !!

This morning I had two responses to this thread. Now they are gone. Fortunately I read yours earlier.

I followed your suggestions but still no joy. The router is set up for DHCP with enough of an IP pool to cover all my computers. Ipv6 is ticked off.
Still could not connect or talk to the router.

I remember that a few months ago I had to use a static IP for my Win 7 Ultimate to get a LAN connection and get to the internet. So I tried a static address for this Win 7 Starter computer and now I can see my other Win 7 computer online. And I can talk to the router from the Starter computer. Still can't see the XP computers on the LAN nor can I connect to the internet.

Looking at the LAN from the W7 Ultimate computer
I see all the computers and notice the Win 7 Starter is on WORKGROUP and not on MSHOME as all other computers are.

Tried to change the Win7 starter computer to MSHOME. Can not rename it that even though a box comes up inviting me to rename. This computer now shows it is on an unnamed, public network. Have not been able to rename or change to home network or to even wipe out HOMEGROUP to start over. Sometimes I think I have got some changes made only to reboot right back to the same old miss-setup.

Tried to type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt while signed in as admin with no luck.
Ctrl-Shift-Enter also does not give me the authority.

I have progressed a little. I can now contact the router with the Win 7 Starter computer and can file share between it and the other Win 7 Ultimate computer. Can not see or share with the XP computers and still error 651 for internet access.

As a reminder all my computers are operating correctly on my LAN and have internet connections through my ADSL modem. Only this "guest" Win 7 Starter computer has issues.

Thanks for those suggestions. Got any more?

    Regards JIM
