    File Permissions

    Hi,

I have a configured file server with Windows file sharing set up.
Recently I have replaced the array with a whole new set of drives and copied the files over.
I have already configured permissions to allow write access to the share, but I have a slight problem which I can't seem to work out.

When a user adds a file, even though the Guest account is granted ownership of the file (as it would, since the Guest account is the standard account Windows file sharing uses), they are not able to rename, modify or delete their content.

In my previous setup users were able to copy files in to the share, rename or manipulate files in the share, and were not able to modify, change attributes or delete any of the files that I (my admin login) had ownership to.
I can't recall if users were able to delete their own files individually per PC (so other users couldn't remove their data) as it wouldn't make sense due to the Guest account being local, but if that was possible then I probably had that set up too.

How do I configure my file/folder permissions to restore this?

    Thanks for any response.

Hi. Please provide some information about your file server. Are you running a Linux file server, Windows Server, WHS, etc...WHAT???? You configured permissions to allow write permissions to the share??? to whom???????? Groups??? users????? We need more information..........

If this is a Linux Server, and you want to grant GUEST user FULL access as you suggest in our post, make all the CHMODs to be 777!!!!!! (WHY would you do such a thing????) (Guest account is the standard account of Windows file sharing uses???? This is open to interpretation and debate!!!!!!)

    Hi RayFinkle,

It is a Windows File Sharing server using the standard Windows File Sharing service available on all copies of Windows.

This thread is old, however the solution was to do nothing, as the standard Windows File Sharing Guest permissions (or the simple allowing of read) allowed users to perform everything I had wanted on my server.
I can't explain how and I don't know why but each PC had access to their own files and could manipulate them: Renaming, deleting, and of course they had full read access and write access to the allowed directories.
I did not need to set anything additional up. It's a miracle.

However, when utilizing the Guest account through IIS FTP, this was not the case.
I don't know why, but it isn't necessary considering the FTP is a fallback in case the Windows File Sharing wasn't available.

P.S: Your excessive use of punctuation is rather frustrating to read.
