Sharing a file on an XP Pro SP3 machine with W7

Hi folks,

I have a small work network setup:

4 x Windows 7 machines
1 x XP Pro SP3 machine

The XP machine shares a .qbw (QuickBooks Pro 2010) company file, and the machine appears on the network, and all machines can see it.

They are all in the same Workgroup, Permissions on the XP file/folder are setup fine, with 'Everyone' having full access.

On double clicking the shared folder on any of the Windows 7 machines, it prompts you for a password.

The dialogue box titled 'Windows Security' states:

Code:
Enter Network Password
Enter your password to connect to: MACHINEX
Username:
Password:
So I try no user/pass and it won't let me in, I try a user account from MACHINEX (the XP machine) using the domain and correct password - it does not work.

Please help as this damn annoying, and really should be straightforward to share between to Windows machines on a Microsoft network...

Hey Bertles86,
I'm wondering a couple of things. One, are you able to get to any other information on this xp machine? Two, have you tried the password for Quickbooks?

Thanks!

Hi Itgirl,

Thanks for the reply I just tried the QuickBooks login with no success.

The login is appearing as I manually try to access the file in Windows 7:

Windows Button>Computer>Network>MACHINEX [on the network]

And then the dialogue appears for asking for the network password.

I cannot access any data on the XP machine from any of my Windows 7 machines.

What kind of anti virus are you running? Also can you try in the "search programs and files" box \\ and the ip address of the xp machine?

All machines are running Avira AntiVir Personal, have all current Windows updates too.

They are all running the standard Windows Firewall.

I've tried with Firewall and AV switched off, neither of which work.

I've turned off homegroups in Windows 7.

All machines are the same workgroup.

I have a NAS and 2 x networked printers plugged into my switches and both the XP and Windows 7 machines can access, but I just cannot access a file shared by the XP machine!

This is getting really infuriating now!

I had the same problem on my network with over 100 pcs, I completely understand your frustration. I actually had to uninstall my AV program do a network discovery and and then reinstall for xp and windows 7 machines to communicate. Were you able to get to the computer using the ip address?

Nope cannot ping the XP machine at all, will do screenshots in a bit.

Just going to try hosting the file on a Windows 7 machine and binning the XP machine, I'll update the thread soon.
