There were some really bad drivers
for Atheros and Ralink adapters. Make sure you have the latest one from the Update Catalog. In device manager, double click the adapter. Copy all the Hardware Ids properties from the Details tab. Mine looks like this:
Using Internet Explorer, go to Microsoft Update Catalog
, confirm the installation of the ActiveX control, and paste each hardware ID from longest to shortest in the search box until you find an appropriate driver
. If you exhaust all the IDs and still can't find a driver trim off the final parts of the hardware ID until you are left with PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx. The xxxx replaces the vendor and device IDs of your adapter. You should be able to download the latest WHQL driver, expand the CAB archive and point Device Manager at the folder where you expanded the archive to update your drivers.
