windows 7 x64 bit can't connect to wireless

I am using an Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter. The adapter can detect the available SSID wireless connections in my area but not able to connect to them. Can anyone provide an explanation to this problem?

Thanks

There were some really bad drivers for Atheros and Ralink adapters. Make sure you have the latest one from the Update Catalog. In device manager, double click the adapter. Copy all the Hardware Ids properties from the Details tab. Mine looks like this:

PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_0301&SUBSYS_25611814&REV_00
PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_0301&SUBSYS_25611814
PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_0301&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_1814&DEV_0301&CC_0280

Using Internet Explorer, go to Microsoft Update Catalog, confirm the installation of the ActiveX control, and paste each hardware ID from longest to shortest in the search box until you find an appropriate driver. If you exhaust all the IDs and still can't find a driver trim off the final parts of the hardware ID until you are left with PCI\VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx. The xxxx replaces the vendor and device IDs of your adapter. You should be able to download the latest WHQL driver, expand the CAB archive and point Device Manager at the folder where you expanded the archive to update your drivers.
