I get that, but that doesn't mean the adapter properties will be guaranteed to be the same. If it's only a 10/100 adatpter, it might be set to 1000mbps. Other settings in Windows 7 may be different to your XP set up.
Generally, if Windows say a cable is unplugged, then the problem is often a physical one - unplugged or damaged cable, or wrong type, though if you've proven the cable then that leaves us with drivers and configuration.
You said you have the latest drivers for your adapter installed. So, that leaves us with configurataion. Either that or a non-functioning port on whatever the cable plugs into.
Look at the device the cable plugs into. Is there an orange or green light on for that port? If there is, does the light go off when you unplug the cable?
