Realtek 8185 wireless connection problem in w7 x64

    Hi people

I have recently bought a new computer. It originally came with vista x64 and I have recently upgraded this to windows 7 x64.

Both on windows vista and windows 7 I have been having wireless connection problems with my Realtek 8185 Extensible 802.11b/g Wireless Device

On Vista the problem could be fixed, although this took a while and sometimes by various methods.

On windows 7 this is also the case. Sometimes it connects, seemingly by luck, but mostly not (although it can see the wireless network and is therefore working). I am using a Netgear WPN824v2 router and this is supplying wireless internet to two other computers, both of which run Windows XP.

Basically when I try to connect to my network I receive a message stating that Windows was unable to connect to my network. The wireless card does however see that the network is being broadcast.

Network diagnostics resets the adapter, but this does not resolve the issue. Windows issues an error message stating that there is a problem with the wireless adapter or access point.

To check if the problem is with the adapter or access point I have disabled the adapter and plugged in a wireless USB device (Netgear WPN111), which then works fine. This suggests to me that it is the adapter that is at fault and not the router. I am also using the correct passphrase key to connect.

The Router currently broadcasts a signal using WPA2-psk security and assigns IP and DHCP automatically. I have tried various drivers for the adapter but to no avail. I have also tried to install and use the latest driver from the realtek website (UI and Driver Auto Installation Program (Support Win7))

I also attempted to try an ipconfig but this tells me that the wireless connection media (the Realtek 8185 is disconnected, even though my PC is identifying wireless networks.

Hopefully you can help me resolve this issue. If you require any further information about the system then please don't hesitate to ask.

    Regards
    Bruce

Hello Bruce and welcome to the forum.
Would it be a problem, if for testing purposes, you temporarily turned off wireless encryption on the router to just see if the problem persists. I don't believe I saw that as one of your diagnostic steps in your original post. If we could try this, it might give us something more to go on. Let us know

Are you running itunes? Is the Bonjour service running? If so set Bonjour to manual start up and see if that helps.

I'm having roughly the same problem, I can't connect to my neighbour's network, it's unsecured. He is aware of me and happy that I was connecting to it, or well when I was. However since I've upgraded to Windows 7 and XP SP3 on my other machine, I can not connect via my 8185 Extensible 802.11b/g Wireless Device.

    Hi People
Thanks for the swift replies. I have been doing some forum searching over the last couple of weeks and have both switched off bonjour and tried to connect without encyption but to no avail. This morning however the internet has started fine, although over the last few weeks this has been very hit and miss with it not working more frequently. I have attached the ipconfig results with it connected. when it wont connect it simply tells me the media is disconnected. I will be restarting the PC several times over the day and will post again if the problem persists.

I have found that some times when it doesnt work'it can be fixed (at least until the next restart) by a variety of methods, but the same one never seems to work twice. Sometimes this can be as simple as leaving the homegroup and going back in or deleting the saved network settings and entering them from scratch. Like i said however, this doesn't always seems to work.

ok well the net has gone again. Ive attached a USB adapter for the moment that i usually use with my laptop (although this seems to be causing a BSoD ip conflict if left in too long..Theres always a problem!). I have attached another ipconfig file with the net not working. wireless connection 2 is the one with the problem. The connection does still see wireless networks being broadcast though. Its infuriating! One minute it seems to be fixed and then it goes again!

This time the connection went as i was mucking around trying to give the connection a static ip address. It has since been changed back to automatic.

On a further note the troubleshooter tells me two different problems. Sometimes it tells me there is a problem with the adapter or access point. Other times it tells me that it cannot connect to the hidden network "My Network". Even though the network is not hidden and broadcasts its SSID. It also sometimes tells me that the network key is not valid. I have checked settings and connection 1 is connecting with exactly the same settings..

You could try using wireless N instead of wireless G, it's been known to fix problems with certain adaptors that weren't made for Windows 7.

Bruce old pal, if you are still having problems with your Realtek adaptor.
Maybe just installing the Windows 7 drivers for your Realtek RTL8185L will help. Look halfway down the page, it shows a new driver for Windows 7. Sorry but it took me awhile to find them because I did not have the complete model number for your router.

It's dated 1/11/2010 Hmm sounds like a brand new driver to me. I'd say we have a winner.

Digitus / RTL 8185 and no connection

    Hi Bruce and chev65.

My son has a brand new PC with Intel i5 processor, Gigabyte motherboard and some big GeForce grafics card. It works smooth and fast. Except if we talk about the wireless internet connection. The net adapter is a Digitus card with an RTL 8185 chip on it. The PC is running Windows 7.

Its behaviour is as random and strange as Bruce describes it. And no chev65, I am sorry to say that the latest Windows 7 driver on Realtek's own website does not help one bit. A good suggestion though but I already tried it.

When the PC starts up it is just fine. I can open up 5 tabpages on an Internet Explorer and run videos from youtube on all 5 whilst reading the news on tabpage 6 and stream live tv on tabpage 7. No problem at all it seems. That just works like that for a while. In fact for such a long while of maybe 15 minutes that I declare "systems are go" to my son and 5 minutes later it sucks. If you click on anything or start up a new browser and key in an url and hit enter it will bring up the first ikons and banners fast enough but that is just the cashing showing itself. The real contents of the page just wont show itself for minutes. It just swirls that blue circle on and on and on. Even if I restart the PC it will not help. Maybe for just 1 minute and then be slooooooow again.

My sons says I have to kill it completely and start up from dead cold. If I do that then yes it works for a handful of minutes and will soon be annoying again. I have uninstalled the drivers and installed them again. I have let Windows 7 find the most suitable driver but also tried out some drivers that I pointed out myself. The name on the netadapter card is Digitus but Windows says it is a Realtek just like Bruce sees. I have tried disable and enable. It just do not want to be stable.

If I grab my Asus laptop and sit in the same room as my sons PC and surf on the internet then there is absolutely no problems on the laptop. My laptop runs Vista. My colleague has the same laptop and he upgraded his Vista to a Windows 7 and he does not have any problems with the wireless either.

The signal strength indicator shows at least 4 out of 5 bars and the Realtek utility tool shows a signal strength of 85% and a quality of that signal to around the same 85%. The IP-address is there and it also says that there is a connection through the router to the internet. Even if I cannot get anything on an internet browser or maybe just a few bits and pieces before it gives up with "page cannot be found" then I can still open up a command prompt and ping different DNS-names for newspapers, the tv-station website, yahoo, youtube and what not. But it will not download an html-page with full contents.

I tried to use Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. When it runs ok for 20 minutes in a row it goes real fast and it seems ok but at any given moment it will give up.

I have looked through the setup on my router to see if there is anything in there, which could be interesting. I turned up some numbers on different stuff and changed the frequence a bit but I did that just out of dispair because as I said: No problems anywhere in the house except my sons new PC.

What is the best course of action? Throw the netadapter card through the window of my dealers shop ( I doubt it is heavy enough for that purpose ) or do any of you guys have some suggestion that I did not think about?

    Kind regards,
    Henrik Berg Andersen
