There is a company called Diamond Multimedia that makes a USB modem that works very well. I tried it with Windows 7 - 64 and 32 bit. I installed it as a generic type modem. I bought this modem from Future Shop for about $45 or so.

I use this modem on an i7 laptop mostly as a fax modem. I have used it on the odd occasion as a dial-up modem for the net. It works very well for that. It can be installed as a P&P device with Windows.

On my desktop, I needed a heavy usage fax modem. I installed a dual serial I/O card, and bought a high end US Robotics serial modem. This was a little more difficult to install because it is not P&P. I had to manually install the drivers, and assign the proper port and etc. The reason for the serial modem, is because it is getting heavy fax use from time to time.

We have an external V90 modem, a Speed Demon which has an ambient chipset. Win 7 , 64 bit, didn't find a driver and accessing Windows update failed. BUT specifying the "standard 56000bps V90 modem" in the "add hardware" drivers list worked well
