Windows 7: slow internet browsing

slow internet browsing

At my home network my pc runs just nicely. But today I moved it to my friends place and for some reason all surfing is really slow, like google.com takes up to 30-40 seconds to load.
Using my laptop computer it loads in about a second on the same network.

I am on a 4mb/500kb connection and nothing else is using the network.
It doesn't matter if I use a cable to connect to the router or a wireless usb thingie.

Speedtest and download speeds are just fine, but surfing around on internet pages is very slow.

Hardware is a I7 at 3.9Ghz, 4GB ram, plenty of free diskspace.
Router is a netgear cvg824g and all settings there looks normal.
OS is windows 7 64bit all updated, all drivers updated too.
Monitoring the network I can see almost no traffic.
Under network properties I have disabled all but the TCP/IPv4 options.
Tried using TuneUp utilities to optimize network settings, didn't help.
I have tried closing all applications in the taskmanager, didn't help.
Clearing all temporary internet files, cookies, various cleanups ect, didn't help.
It's the same if I use another browser like firefox or chrome.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

For you speed test are you using something like this?

Speakeasy - Speed Test
Are you on your friends home network?
I'm no expert on these things. These are things that come to mind when I read your post. 4 mb should be fairly quick. Have you tried it without the router. These are just some thoughts of mine until the smart people on this site wake up and have their coffee.

Yep tried a few of these speedtests and the reports fits pretty my network specs, about 15-20% lower which is pretty normal.
Not possible to go around this router as it's a special connection so can't try without it and yes it's my friends home network.

Different networks are configured in different ways. Simply the distance to the next node of your telecommunications provider affects the speed and availability of connections and bandwidth. Also, you can have two houses together, but connected to different nodes. The network connection in one house is fast, and in the other it is slow.

True, but doesn't explain why my 5 year old laptop is much faster when on the same network and placed right next to my desktop pc. There must be something I have missed.
FTP, Telnet ect also takes much longer to connect on my desktop pc.

Does your desktop have the same antivirus as the laptop? Some antivirus have a proactive real time scan of web pages. For example, AVG has something called LinkScanner that really slows things down.

Got nod32 installed but already tried disabling it to see if that could be the reason, no change.
On my own home network it did run fine with everything installed.

tried a few more things like tweaking the various adapter settings like duplex, buffer sizes ect. no change either.
switched cabel, port in router, rebooting internet connection all the same

Is there any way you can set up your system so that all inbound traffic goes through the onboard network adaptor and all outbound through the wireless connection?
