Network connection vanished after hardware upgrade

I upgraded my desktop's cpu, motherboard & memory the other day, but didn't do a clean install of Windows 7. It caused me some problems, but thanks to some of the users of this site, I have most of the issues resolved.

However, there is one issue I can't resolve & it is regarding my network/internet connection. I have my Billion modem plugged into a D-Link Wireless Router, whihc is then plugged into 1) My desktop (Windows 7); 2) Work Laptop (XP SP3) & 3) Canon network printer. All was working fine before the upgrade.

Now, I can't access the internet or the home network through the desktop. The cable is plugged in, but there is no acknowledgement of the PC being connected to anything. The lights around the LAN port on the mobo don't go on when a cable is connected, the light on the router doesn't go on when the cable is connected & Windows 7 says there is no connection.

I tried plugging the modem directly into the PC, & the internet connection works, so I know the LAN port is working on the new mobo. I've also tried all combinations of cables & ports between the pc, the laptop & the router.

How can I fix this? As far as I'm aware, the software for the Router is up to date & so is the software for the motherboard.

Were you using a fixed IP address by any chance or doing MAC Address filtering in the router? If so, changing the mother board changed the MAC address so that would now fail.

Otherwise, turn everything off, Modem, Router, both computers and printer. Then turn them on in sequence, waiting for each one to settle down before moving on to the next.

Modem 1st, then Router then Win 7 computer. See if it is recognized.
Turn on the other computer then the printer once it is up and stable.

Edit: Forgot to mention, did you try resetting the Router (little button, usually near the power connector, use a pen to push in and hold for 10 seconds or so). You will have to setup the Wireless security again once you do that.

I've tried resetting the router with no luck. As far as I know I didn't have static IP or MAC filtering on, but I'll try what you suggested anyway.

Tried turning everything off, waited a while & then turend it all back on in sequence. No luck, still no connection to the desktop. Is it possible there is some sort of conflict between the network adapter & wireless router?

What does ipconfig say?

Click on Start then Run and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as show, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

I've fixed the problem...it seems that half the ports on my router are dead, stupid me was too impatient to wait long enough for lights to come on after swapping plugs around.

Thanks for all the help!
