    Disable LAN freezes computer

If anyone can make sense of this i will buy you a cookie!

As soon as i disable my LAN adapter, Win7 freaks out and starts logging all sorts of atapi errors in event log.
the pc also becomes unusable apart from a few seconds of life every now and then.

    Log Name: System
    Source: Service Control Manager
    Date: 06/07/2009 21:25:21
    Event ID: 7042
    Task Category: None
    Level: Information
    Keywords: Classic
    User: SYSTEM
    Computer: G7
    Description:
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control.

The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)]

    Comment: None

    after this:

    Log Name: System
    Source: atapi
    Date: 06/07/2009 21:25:21
    Event ID: 11
    Task Category: None
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    User: N/A
    Computer: G7
    Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.
I've attached a screenshot of the event log.
there are no such errors before the highlighted entry, only after until I manage to re-enable LAN.

Its a week old installation of RC 7100. no hardware faults shown in devman. everything works perfectly 99.9% of the time. the only issue i've had with win7 is when i disabled the LAN adapter.

    Sense? this makes none!

Somewhere in your system or background, something is making a call to a network resource (whether you have such a resource or not).

Do you have any reason to have NetBIOS enabled? If not disable it.

hmm... I shall experiment some more and disable as much as possible which accesses the net.
Its just frustratingly annoying when you only get 10-20seconds to do anything during its spaz-out
