Windows 7: Connected to Modem but no Internet

Connected to Modem but no Internet

This keeps happening after long periods of the machine being powered off. I will boot the machine and the network connection icon will tell me there is No Internet, but I can still connect to the modem. I've been just rebooting the machine to get internet again. It hasn't failed to reconnect on reboot yet /knock on wood.

Now I know this has been partially discussed for wireless connections in other threads but this is not the same issue. The reason I say this is this DSL modem has two wireless connections on it as well as my machine which is wired. If I boot my machine and get the no internet alert it kicks the two wireless machines off the internet as well.

I'm using Windows 7 x64 and no this is not a browser issue. The network connection icon on the task bar is producing the no internet warning before loading a browser. I have both Firefox and IE 8 on this O/S.

Any ideas?

Can you disable the wireless connections (within the router)? I wasn't using mine and this seemed like a sensible security issue too.
Maybe that will bypass this problem.

The wireless connections are required and shouldn't have any barring on the connection since I am wired directly. And the problem is that when this machine doesn't connect it actually kicks the other two wireless machines off as well, even if they have open and active sessions. Something about the OS itself is affecting the router. This never happened with XP. In fact I have never lost internet connection at this site to anything other than a power outage in 3 years.

I've updated and rolled back drivers, tried to force the connection, removed the hardware and re-installed it, installed the ISP software and removed it, and nothing seems to make any difference.

@ Zenn, have you tried flushing your DNS cache? You could also check your firewall and anti-virus apps to make sure they aren't blocking you.

Yeah, it actually started doing it after a completely clean install.
