Good Sturdy Cheap Router :)

Hey All

So basically, my internet connection isnt the best it could be (i can pretty much download at a max rate of 230 kbps and i am promised up to 24Mbits). I called my ISP (internode - i live in Australia by the way :P ) and they said there is nothing they can do at this point. They cannot lodge a fault with Australia's telephone infrastructure owner, Telstra, unless i am getting speeds of like 150 kbps or lower, other wise they will just reject it.

My ISP told me to try a different router, and that could potentially solve my problems.

So, i ask you, people of the interwebs, what router would you recommend for me? Something relativly modern and not too expensive. My current router is a Netgear DG834g V2.

Also, for reference this is my current plan: Internode :: Residential :: ADSL Broadband :: Easy Reach :: Plans (im on the 60gb version, not bundled with nodephone).

Things i have tried to fix connection speeds:

1. Upgrade firmware
2. Delete all settings, restore to factory settings, then reinstall firmware
3. Use different phone lines/cables/computers to test equipment.

Out of ideas guys!! So any help on the issue or a new router would be great!!

Thanx all

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to add, I am 1km away from the exchange "as the crow flies" and 2.4km "normally"

Hello Steve, {another Aussie here.}

Before you spend money on another router that MAY solve your problems ascertain if you are yet another "victim" of Telstra's "wisdom" in installing Pair Gain.
I am !
Please advise if this is so.

{Pair gain is a method of transmitting multiple POTS signals over the twisted pairs traditionally used for a single traditional subscriber line in telephone systems. Pair gain has the effect of creating additional subscriber lines. This is typically used as an expedient way to solve subscriber line shortage problems by using existing wiring, instead of installing new wires from the central office to the customer premises.}

Your current provider or Telstra certainly will be able to tell you.

FYI it is possible to get a reasonable ADSL1 Download Speed { by Australian Standards}on a Pair Gain System. {depending on the Provider}

Oks, thanks for that I just still think that 230kbps is pretty crapp. Especially when like 4/5 years ago i used to get amazing speeds...

Are you currently under contact to your provider?
TPG {here} are more innovative as regards Pair Gain / better speed.

Umm no, i think previously when we signed up with internode, like 5 years ago, we were locked into 2 years, but now its just pay one month in advance type thing, so like a one month contract so to speak. WHy do you ask?
