    Can't connect internet, Unidentified Network

    Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
    ACER Aspire X3400
    Nvidia Nforce 10/100/1000 ethernet
    Cable internet
    SB1502 Cable modem

When I try to connect to the internet, it just says "identifying" then says it is an "unidentified network". I've tried:

    Resetting the modem
    Checked all cables
    Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers
    Disabled & enabled the drivers
It's set to automatically connect to DNS
Updating the ethernet with the latest from Microsoft
    Ran ipconfig /release and renew
Tried another modem and new cables
Tried other houses with DSL & Cable internet

I installed a USB wireless device which worked when I tested it in wireless areas. But so far nothing has worked for the wired part. At one point before all this started, the internet worked intermittently and would work at other houses perfectly. So I assumed it was my modem or connection at my house. But then I plugged another PC into my modem and it worked instantly. So I know there is no physical problem with my connection, modem or cables.

Try resetting your TCP/IP stack by doing the following. Right click the Command Prompt (CMD.EXE) and select "Run as Administrator".

Run the following command netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

please post results of an ipconfig /all command here.

How long has this been happening and do you have auto updating switched on? A number of forum members have experienced similar symptoms since the last auto update round about 18/19th April. My other half had similar problems and I did a system restore to a date prior to the updates (about 10 days before) and everything returned to normal. The update has changed since as the machine in question has auto updated correctly. The system restore trick may help you out if you haveauto update on...Good luck!

Hi, what happens when you right-click the network icon and select Troubleshoot problems?

As for auto updating, yes it is on. If you could give me a name of the suspected update then I could uninstall it.

Troubleshooting told me to reset my modem so I did. The results say: "Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

The computer is 2 months old. Right from the beginning the internet has worked intermittently. The internet would work till the PC was shut off. Then to get it to work again after the PC was back on I had to unplug stuff and spray out all the contacts and it would work till shut off. Then the same thing each time. BUT, when I tried it at houses with DSL instead of my cable, the internet would work instantly. But now it won't work anywhere. And any other PC's internet works fine with my cable modem setup.

thats as u may know is simply a DHCP issue, any other devices on ur network?

make sure its not hardware related can try a linux live boot CD several times to check.

that way you can either see if its 7 or the PC it's self, either back to factory settings through built in recovery. or take ur PC back if faulty.

    also when u have a 169 address

    try

    ipconfig /release
    then
    ipconfig /renew

see if u pick up an IP

The reason you have no connectivity is because of this address.

This is an automatic IP address assigned to the computer when it is set to recieve an IP through DHCP but cannot locate the DHCP server.

I would suggest setting a static IP address instead.
