Running out of options to try, homegroup sharing

Hi. I found this forum by finding another user with the exact same problem that I have, but unfortunately, his wasn't resolved. I did a search here after, and have found similar problems, but solutions were all ones I've tried already, and frankly, after about 6 months of wrestling on and off with it, I just can't stand the thought of running through ANOTHER 50 pages of answers, so I'm just asking straight out.

    COMPUTERS:
    Windows Ultimate x32 Laptop
    Windows Ultimate x64 PC
Connected via Network, drive mapping AND homegroup (always thought one of these options would pan out)

    PROBLEM:
When I am on the laptop, I cannot cut & paste/move or delete files to or from my main PC. When I am on my main PC, I can manage all my files and actions on my laptop HD. When I am initiating actions from my PC, I am god. When I am initiating actions from my laptop, I am nothing, as I do not have permission on my destination folder.

    SO FAR:
I have been doing all kinds of work arounds. I'm sure you know the drill. But I have hit a point in my setup (mainly because my laptop HD isn't huge, but my main PC HD is huge, I do a lot of media stuff, and I do 95% on my laptop) where the workarounds are such a pain, I just can't stand it. If I could directly read and write to files on my PC HD, my world would be so much simpler.

    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
I probably won't be able to remember everything, as I've been working on this on and off for quite a while, but off the top of my head:
-Set all permissions on homegroup sharing to be as permissive as I can
-Turned off password protection for sharing
-Even though UAC is turned off on both computers, I tried a "take ownership" program where I took ownership of the destination folder
-I've tried accessing it through homegroup options and network options
-I've tried going "bigger" with the sharing by sharing the entire User folder
-I've tried going "smaller" with the sharing by sharing just one tiny folder on my destination PC
-I've done every option I can find on the right click "Share With" and giving full permissions to everyone
-I've gone through Advanced Sharing in Properties and turned on every advanced sharing option I can find, giving rights to everyone I can find
-I've run the Network troubleshooter and the Homegroup Troubleshooter, both of which can see problems, but really don't know how to solve them. Perhaps I'd like to let someone remote in to help me
-I've searched Windows knowledgebase, forums, googled here there and everywhere. At this point every permission I can lay my hands on must be open to people who don't even have computers, yet I can't access FROM my laptop TO my PC. Yet, again, I can access everything FROM my PC TO my laptop, which is only handy if my PC is the one travelling around the house with me.

I'm very sorry for the lengthy first post, but as you may have gathered, I'm starting to pull my hair out here. Please help me. Maybe I've missed something obvious.

First off I would stop using the Home Network option and switch to the Work option.
I have found it easier. Next, I'm on XP PC right now so I can't look it up, I'd turn off a feature that give you some type of controlled access???? (really can't remember what is is called) and start using User Authentication (again not sure if that is what it's called). Which mean you access other computers by typing in a User name and password.

Then you could try having an account that uses the same username and password on each PC.
This was what I did on XP even if the main Named Admin account was different and then I could hide the other account from displaying on the Welcome screen, haven't found that option in 7.

As to getting to some places on the C drive of each PC that may not happen. especially the User folder (it can be hit and miss). Win 7 locks down certain areas and if you try to unlock them, IE assign greater permissions (taking ownership), you could screw up your install by screwing up the Junction points.

Can you access anything on your desktop PC from the notebook?

The other option is to put everything in the Shared/Public folder. This doesn't really move stuff there it just sets up access to it. I personally don't care for that option but it is still an option.

Also take a look into the security tab. Add your named Admin account to the shares in the security tab.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

Thank you very much for your reply! I appreciate the response.

I can access everything on my PC drive, I have full read privileges, but I haven't been able to grant read/write privileges. It's frustrating because I clearly managed it from my laptop, but can't seem to replicate the process on the PC.

I'm going to carefully re-read your post and see if there is anything new I can try. I thought I'd tried changing the homegroup type before to Work, but since I work on computers all day, I sometimes I get confused which troubleshooting steps I've tried on which computers, so I'll give it a go.

I'll post back my results, and hopefully with some assistance, I'll be able to get a two-way read/write access going.

    I forgot to add:
Underneath my named User account, it does say "Shared". Under Security in Properties, everyone in the Homegroup has full privileges, including the right to modify files. Actually, EVERYONE has the right to modify, as I've been so frustrated.

I have noticed that when I right click and use the "Share With", it always says "Nobody". I've tried changing it to "Homegroup-Read/Write" a million times. Nothing happens when I choose "Homegroup", and when I use the option to specify specific users, it says "Sharing items, this may take a few minutes". That runs for maybe 20-30 minutes, then disappears. When I click back on "Share with..." it is right back to Nobody, and no one is listed for Sharing. Even though the folder says "Shared" underneath it.

Make sure your firewall or anti-virus is not blocking the laptop from the desk top.
