Windows 7: Slow Network Performance

Slow Network Performance

I am getting extremely slow network performance from yesterday, and all of a sudden. I am connecting to a WinXP machine, the file transfer is slow, accessing files and folders is relatively fast but there is some slight stutter while exploring, right clicking takes a while, and accessing it via remote desktop software UltraVNC is slow as well.

I don't know what happened. I have restarted both the computers. I checked all my NIC settings. I can access it fine via another PC running Vista. So it is a problem on my end. I am fairly sure it is not my NIC. Internet/Downloading is fine. It's just the damn network. I haven't changed anything.

Please help!

Turned off IPv6 now, but no difference. And yes, internet is fit and fine. It's just the network.

Update on my problem:
It's the bloody router. I think. I have 3 pcs connected to it. Mine, the XP machine and my bros. Now, if i remove the lan wire of my bros pc from the router, the network access becomes normal! If i plug it back in, it becomes slow again. It does not matter if my bros PC is turned on or not. Just the presence of a 3rd lan wire complicates my connection. I have tried this 4-5 times.

So is it the router? I would say yes, but my brother has no such problem. He can access and view files normally. So it's a combination of Win 7 and my router that's creating the problem. Maybe you guys have an idea?

hey

Glad you may have found something.several possiblities. nic on your bro's, cable, etc.

have you tried mixing up the cables, then the ports on the router, etc.

That would help you narrow it down. sometimes a 10 meg nic on a 100 meg link will slow the entire segment down. Something wlse you can do (yeah i know the slowdown is on the lan) is to run a ping from yours, the xp, and your bros. they should be the same in the first 2 steps (mac, and router).

Sorry we haven't been more helpful but alot of times it takes someone to worry it to death like you.

I still jump back in anytime this thread gets a post

Hey, thanks a lot for your help man. Hopefully, we will be able to figure it out somehow.

I have tried different ports on the router, but the result is the same. If only mine and the XP machine are connected, it works fine. If another PC gets connected to the router, it immed. slows down. Very odd.

I am not sure if it's my bro's NIC because it does not matter if his PC is shut or ON.

How do i run a ping from PC to PC?

Ping is fine but one thing I did notice is the IP 192.168.254.69. Is that from your router or the ISP? your router if it is a nat router should be supplying inside IP' like 192.168.1.101
