Windows 7: Networking to Ubuntu

Networking to Ubuntu

My partner has just bought a new laptop using Windows7 and currently is in the process of finding her way with the new OS. Previously she was using XP.

Currently I access the XP system from my Ubuntu laptop and this is primarly to ensure a full backup of her data apart from XP.

What I would like to know is 2 fold.

Firstly how do I access the Windows7 laptop in order that I can assist in backing up data externally. This would let me see both XP and seven on my Ubuntu system.

Secondly as she is a bit unsure at the moment with seven she is using XP and then copying data over to the seven system. How do I arrange matters that access the XP data from the seven system. This could make things a bit easier to compare both side by side.

I find things easier to keep matters up to date from Ubuntu as I can keep out of her feet and work clutter free so if you can offer a solution it will be most appreciated.

Many thanks for your reply.

I followed your example only to find that initially I could see the Thinkpad and Windows Network. Clicking on the Thinkpad icon produced nothing. Going back to Windows network it let me access the XP system OK.

Knowing that Windows takes its own sweet time to effect a network connection I let matters hang for some time but again nothing other than the Thinkpad icon disappearing. Still able to access XP.

I had also hoped that following your guidance that I could see the XP system from seven but nothing doing there either.

Bought a Windows 7 for Dummies and found that I must be the dummy as it offered no solution.

Can you offer any further assistance?
