Win 7 sp1 32bit cannot connect to sql 2000

I've 3 Vista pcs and 1 xp connecting to sql server 2000 on 2003 server. I'm trying to connect a Win 7 but get this error. I can browse the sever and modify files ok.
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
SQL Server does not exist or access denied

make sure under network and sharing center and advanced sharing settings that all are enabled like network discovery, file sharing and such for some reason if you dont do that databases have a hard time i found this out the hard way with our oracle database installs

Everything there was turned on. Again, I can browse the server ok, but cannot create an odbc source.
