Bandwidth capped at 175k on 1.44mbps cable

    Greetings!

I'm really hoping someone can help me out with this very unusual problem. I recently moved. I had cable Internet at the previous location where I routinely downloaded at 750k to 1mb. Moved, and now the best I can do is 175k down, even though all speed tests show me at 1.44mbps.

I've been struggling with this for a week now.

Basically, this problem persists no matter what OS I use. I have a dual-boot Ubuntu 10.10 setup. It also doesn't matter if I am connected wired or wireless.

Doesn't matter if I am connected directly cable modem to PC or through my brand new router.

And the oddest part is, I have Vonage. It goes through the router, so the PC is removed from situation. Yet, if I am downloading at my max, 175k, Vonage is unusable. As if I am using all my bandwidth.

I have tested my speed on 3 different sites, all show me at 1.44mbps down. I have also run diagnostics on my NIC and everything passed. The diagnostic tool shows throughput(receive) at 1.44mbps.

I'm going to try a new NIC tomorrow on the assumption that something happened to my PC during the move. It seems unlikely, but it's the only thing I can think to do at this point.

I realize this isn't exactly a Win7 issue since the problem happens with Linux as well, but I thought I'd give someone who is more technical than me a crack at it.

    Any input/help would be appreciated.

You need to contact your provider; those speeds are unacceptable. Did you order the economy internet?

maybe i am misunderstanding here but 1.44mbps should = 180k so it looks as if you are right their well minus 5k.

    I'm a moron

You're right... 1.44mbps is 180k. According to this page...

    I guess I forgot my math... I was thinking 1MB was 1,000K...

    Ugh! Do I feel stupid...

Np well all make mistakes from time to time. you are right to a extent, but i think you confusion was the difference from a Megabyte vs Megabit.

Exactly... and I had 3 other 'serious' geeks involved... and THEY didn't get it either. :)

    At least I'm not alone...
