Windows XP Mode (Virtual Machine) accessing Internet

    Hi All,

Is is possible to access the Internet from inside an XP Mode Virtual Machine, running on Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit ?

Looking at the Virtual Machine Networking settings, I have a choice of three options for Adapter 1: "Internal Network" , "Shared Networking (NAT)" , and "Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller".

Looking at Network Connections inside XP Mode, it says the LAN or High-Speed Internet status is "Connected, Firewalled" (and Device Name "Intel 21140-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Generic)")

But Internet Explorer inside XP Mode says "the page cannot be displayed. To attempt fixing network connectivity problems, click Tools, and then click Diagnose Connection Problems". I have tried ticking Automatically detect settings under Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings.

Windows 7 ipconfig says IP address 172.26.76.188, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 172.26.76.1.

Inside XP Mode ipconfig says IP Address 192.168.131.65, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.131.254. I can successfully ping both 172.26.76.188 and 172.26.76.1 from inside XP Mode.

I can also successfully access "http://172.26.76.188:8080" from Internet Explorer inside XP Mode (because I am running Apache Tomcat on Windows 7).

Thanks for your time and advise,
    Best regards,
    James

Which one of these options do you have selected? The one that you want is Shared Networking (NAT).

I have now RESOLVED this Internet connectivity problem as follows :-

    (1) Install Mozilla Firefox inside the Windows XP virtual machine and set as default web browser.

    (2) In Windows 7 Mozilla Firefox, goto Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings , and make a note the Proxy configuration URL.

    (3) Download a copy of this Proxy configuration file, and make sure accessible from the Windows XP virtual machine.

    (4) In Windows XP mode Firefox, goto Network Settings, and use this file as your Proxy configuration URL (for example "file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/XPMUser/My%20Documents/proxy.pac")

    (5) Windows XP mode Firefox should now fully work, including YouTube, etc.

    Thanks and regards,
    James
