Anyway to share the win7 printer to a win98 machine?

hello, i switched my bosses computer to win7 here at work, all went fine.. we are using win98 under VMWARE 6.5 for our windows 98.. everything works great, except i cannot get it to access the printer on the win7 machine, it sees it but always gets a access denied error, i have turned off password sharing.. and any of the xp/win7 machines see it fine.. just the damn 98.. and i can't not use 98 cause of our POS software...

Any ideas? thanks!

Anyone have any luck trying this? i have tried the tricks people posted for making vista work with 98.. but no luck in 7

thats a tough one an im clueless. Did a search and came up with a thread in our sister site vista64, but dont think it had a solution. what abt the printers mfr support?

well, its not the printer... 98 wont see win7 file shares either, i have 2 win7 machines here and 2 98 machines, same result on all of em...

While your information is still vague, try this on the w7 machine and see if it helps
First uncheck the Folder Option for simple file sharing (under View Tab) to invoke the Security Tab under Sharing & Security. Then regain the special permissions under Drive Properties\Sharing & Security\Advance\Owner by clicking the Computer Administrator or User Name you want to replace owner on subcontainers ....etc. Also remember not to have the hidden folders and files option checked. You could also create a username and password that will exist on the w7 and the win 98 machines. Or, you could just move the printer one of the xp machines, and see if that works as well.

Just for information, are you in a workgroup or domain environment?
Also try changing the level of encryption on the file sharing in w7 from 128 to 40-56.

You can share printers with any X86/X64 combination

Proceed as follows

(examples are for Windows 7 and XP computers but should work for most Windows combinations.

Printer can be attached to Either 64 bit or 32 bit machine - no prob -- other computers will be able to use it.

So long as you still can PRINT from the W98 machine and the printer is shareable via your network the W7 computer will be able to print (even if its W7 x-64),

zay, its a workgroup setup, i have the encryption set to 40-50, actually at this point i am just curious if anyone has been able to see w7 shares from 98 at all?

And the printer is hooked to the w7 machine, and im trying to print to that share from the win98 machine, not the other way around:) will try what jimbo said though...

Thanks, i actually ended up setting up a linux box to printer share... win98 and win7 both see it fine.. amazing that ms isn't able to do that:)

I just wanted to summarize the solution available:

HOW TO SHARE PCs AND PRINTERS ON LOCAL WIN 7 AND WIN 98 NETWORK

1. Download and install on Win 98 DSClient for Win9x, then reboot;

2. Open regedit at the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control, then create a key named LSA, then under the newly created key, create a DWORD value named LMCompatibility, and set it's value to 3 ;

3. Go to Control Panel, and open the Users applet, then create a new User Account with the same credentials (User Name and Password) as the one on Win 7;

4. Reboot your Win 98 PC again, and logon with the newly created account. Setup shared folders or drives, and printers;

5. In Win 7 also setup shared folders or drives, and printers, then follow the guide How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing to select other Networking Settings;

6. In Win 7, set “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel” to “1” and reboot. Doing this decreases Win 7 access security, but now you can work with shared folders on Win 98 from Win 7 PC;

7. To access a USB printer, connected to Win 98 PC, set it up in Win 7 as local with 64-bit drivers, then add 32-bit drivers for sharing in Printer Prefs. Reconnect printer to Win 98, and change its port in Win 7 Printer Prefs from local to its Win 98 network address, like \\workgroup_name\printer_name ;

8. To access a shared Win 7 folder from Win 98, don't try to browse its Network Neighborhood. Instead, open it by typing it's UNC path, like \\workgroup_name\share_name in Run dialog or Win Explorer's address bar in Win 98. You can map open share to a network drive, but it may need be remapped after each reboot;

9. To access from Win 98 a shared USB printer, connected to Win 7 PC, click on Printers in Win Explorer, and try using Win 98 Add Printer Wizard that appears in Printers window. Or setup it as a local in Win 98, then change its port to Win 7 printer's network address. It may be a challenge though to set it up;

10. If Win Explorer slows down, wait... If it gets repeatedly slow on each click, close and reopen, or reboot the PC. You're done! Don't forget to restore network security settings in Win 7, when you don't need to share it with Win 98.
