Local Area Connection: Invalid IP Address

When connecting via an ethernet cable to a parent's modem, my laptop claims that Local Area Connection is unable to connect due to an invalid IP address.
I've looked at many forums, but no single solution seems present and no one shares the same specs or IP config results with me.

Specs:
Laptop: Samsung Q430
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 M 450 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4GB
Graphics Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce 310M
Hard Drives: 500 GB hard drive capacity, partitioned into C: and D and a recovery partition.

Any idea what's going wrong/any suggestions?

Did you run the ip config command with the ethernet cable connected between the computer and the modem? If yes, its possible the cable is bad or your wired NIC has gone south. Check with a different cable or check this same cable on a different computer. If the cable turns out good, there may be a problem with the NIC.

On the software side, you can try a few things. Disable the wired NIC, then reenable.

Enable or disable a network adapter

Check that you have the latest LAN drivers installed.

Try resetting TCP/IP.

Woop, spaced running it with the ethernet cable plugged in. I have it plugged in to a tower so that I can access the internet. The cable is working fine in the desktop.

...though it doesn't appear to change.

I doubt it is the NIC as I can connect via ethernet at other places, such as a friend's house. That said, I did disable and reenable the NIC. No change.
It is very possible that I don't have the latest LAN drivers, I have used wireless connection lately, and missed an update or two a while back. As soon as I am near wifi again, I will update the drivers. If that fails, I will try and reset my IP.

I would just shut down he computer, then shut down the modem. Wait a minute then power the modem back on first. Wait for the modem to show activity lights (usually takes a minute or 2) then power the pc back on.
