Connect Using Telnet

I know, I know, no one uses telnet anymore, but I need to know how to use it either way. I'm using a Win 7 and Vista. I installed Telnet client and server on both using "programs and features", and I enable it using services.

I've tried may different ways, but the way I got closest to connecting(was prompted for username/password) is from the telnet command line I entered "open "ip address"" and the ip I got was from ipconfig from the Vista. And all I get is could not open connection host, on port 23: connection failed.

I have 4 computers, 2 running on Win 7, one on Vista with a dual boot of XP Pro and the other is my main computer(yes, it's a mac). But none of that matters, a pc can connect to another pc using telnet server/client...right?

What am I doing wrong(and don't say using a mac...I got that before)

It's for n exam. I just need to connect 2 computers using telnet and send some basic commands. Then we're going to move on to the bigger and better.

Have you allowed telnet on Port 23 to get through your firewalls (software on the PC if fitted and also on your router)? The other way would be to get a "crossover" Lan cable and directly join the 2 computers via the ethernet ports. Make sure you start telnet as a service on both as well. Don't forget to diable the service when you go back to normal use as any hacker would just loveto be able to connect via telnet...it would be a gift from the gods!!!!

So I got back to the username and password screen, but now it is saying the username and password is invalid. Is there something I have to setup? I just used the admin username/password that is on the remote computer.

Well I tried both, the server and client username/password, but they both didn't work. "The handle is invalid" is what I keep getting.

Try going here: Enable the Telnet Server Service then once you have done and completed the actions, download and install "Cygwin" which allows you to have the full range of unix/linux commands available to you.
