    Odd Wireless Connection issue

Hey I am new to this forum and only really signed up to see if someone can figure this out.

My router is upstairs and when the computer (not a laptop) is beside it the wireless recognizes my network and works just fine.

When I take the computer downstairs to hook it up to my big TV as a monitor I have the wireless doesn't recognize the network and calls it public and won't connect properly.

the signal strength is fine. my PS3 works normally at about 90% and the compter sees the network just fine so I know it isn't the signal it is something else. If you want to see any additional info let me know and I will post it.

    Using windows 7 64-bit, wireless n card.

This whole windows 7 is new to me and I have had some puzzles already with this on my network. Like having to input a MAC address for a wired connection with MAC Filtering

If you have the laptop in the same room as the TV, but you don't connect it to the TV, do you have any network problems?

    It is not a laptop....

it is a Mini PC that I bought for the soul purpose of connecting to my TV.

If I don't connect it to the TV I don't have a monitor. I think I might know what is happening.

I am going to have to test it, but I reconnected the the upstairs monitor last night before bed and left the wireless enabled for the night (which I don't normally do)came down this morning and the same thing happened. I happened to notice that there is a check box that says allow the computer to turn of this device to save power was checked. So I disabled and enabled the wireless card and it connected just fine.

So this might be it. I don't have time today to do this but will soon I will re post if I don't have any success

Ok so I finally got a chance to try it again and nothing!!!!

This is driving me crazy! I uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless card to try and fresh set up the network connection. It found the network just fine and it even asked me for a password and said I gave the wrong password. The signal strength is excellent but is just will not identify the network! I finally gave up and brought it back upstairs and plugged it in and started it up and without doing anything it hooked up to the network and I have internet access with it even being labelled as a public network. I changed that to show home but it wasn't needed.

Something else of note. It said connected to my network but limited connectivity. But I couldn't access the router via ip address and the wireless network printer was showing offline. so I am not really sure what "limited connectivity" I had.

Someone please help! I had a laptop connected to it in the basement with no issue at the same time.

Fire wall is completely off. and am typing this via the wireless connection beside the router without making any changes.

I'll give it a go...the wireless card on the mini pc, is it factory or and add on? If an add on, what is the exact make and model #? Have you tried updating the driver for the card? The thing with wi-fi adapters is there all not made alike, which includes reception. Some are just better than others. IMO, it's acting like it's not picking up the signal, either the distant is to great or there is some major interference where the TV is at. Two possible test to try. First move the TV closer to the PC and see if that works. Next would be to try a different wi-fi card. If it turns out to be electrical interference there are some AC outlet adapters to help boost the gain of the wi-fi signal.

I don't think is it signal strength. Just because I can see the network and it shows excellent. As well it asked me for a password and said I input it incorrectly and asked me to retry inputting it and I did and it went through. So there is communication there. As well I just checked the Log on the router and it is saying the Mac address it attempting to connect

This is what the log is saying:

"SSID: Wireless system with MAC address 000000000000 disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed" (network Name and Mac address removed)

this is when it was downstairs and then when I bring it upstairs this is what happens:

"SSID: Wireless system with MAC address 000000000000 associated"
    Next Line:
"SSID: Wireless system with MAC address 000000000000 secured and linked"

and all I did was move it back upstairs.

The Network adapter is Factory Wireless n

I have a USB d-link wireless device I will try and see before I try and move the TV! LOL

I am going to try and remove all security to see if that helps

I wouldn't remove your security! My first thought is that it is too far from the router. The network it's reading may not be your network, but that of a neighbor, especially since it doesn't see the name of your network. I would try moving the router downstairs to see if it connects. If it does, you could get a repeater or an AP to relay the signal downstairs.

This freeware may be of some help in determining signal strength of your network and those around you:

I agree with James. Can you access your wireless router's management software & change your SSID to a name you can recognize as your network?

Also, I'm wondering if a neighboring wireless router may have the same MAC address as yours?

Another thought - Is your router set to auto select a wireless channel? You may want to set it to a fixed channel after scanning for other wireless signals nearby. Select a channel no one else is using if possible.
