Help, I am migrating my shared files from my home based Windows XP Home system to a Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit system and would like to have the same functionally as I have had on XP. I still have laptops and other systems running XP.
On Windows 7 I want to be able to access a shared folder one way with read-only access (for protection) but access the entire drive another way with full read/write/change access (for updating/copying/deleting files). I have no problem doing this with XP but am having problems on Windows 7.
Here is what worked on XP
File Structure
D:\Media\Pictures
I shared the Pictures Folder as follows:
Checked: Share this folder on the network
Share Name: Pictures
UnChecked: Allow network users to change my files
I shared the entire Drive D as follows:
Checked: Share this folder on the network
Share Name: Backup
Checked: Allow network users to change my files
If I access files via the \\FileServer\Pictures share I can not delete them (which is the protection I wanted). If I access the same Pictures folder via \\FileServer\Backup\Media\Pictures I am allowed to delete them (again this is what I wanted).
On Windows 7 I have set it up to be exactly the same but trying to delete a file via \\HTPC\Backup\Media\Pictures from an XP machine results in the error: access denied
Now here is how I have configured the Windows 7 shares:
Right click on Pictures Folder then select Sharing Tab shows:
Sharing enabled on \\HTPC\Pictures
Clicking on the Share button shows sharing with Everyone as Read only
Right click on Drive D then select Sharing Tab shows:
Sharing enabled on \\HTPC\Backup
The SHARE button on this tab is greyed out
Advanced Sharing shows: Share this folder
and Permissions show Everyone as having Full, change and read checked.
From an XP machine on the network what I cannot do is delete a file such as \\HTPC\Backup\Media\Picture\xyz.jpg
But from that same XP machine on the network I can copy the above file to another directory \\HTPC\Backup\Documents\xyz.jpg
and then I can delete it \\HTPC\Backup\Documents\xyz.jpg without any errors.
And help is appreciated.
