New & Confused
I'm new to Windows 7, not new to computers (which may be part of the problem, because Windows 7 is certainly a culture shock for my poor old brain). I started out in CP/M a few centuries ago, then several flavors of DOS, then Win 3.1, then started networking with Windows for Workgroups, then both Win2K and XP (still running XP on my usual desktop), added Vista to the local network with no big problems -- but Windows 7 is driving me crazy.
I can see and access my XP machine from the Windows 7 machine and I can somewhat access the Windows 7 machine from the XP machine but that's where things get confusing.
From Windows 7 I can see the folders that I have shared on the XP machine and everything works as I would expect (at least until I look at it from the XP machine).
But when I access the Windows 7 machine from the XP machine, I see what appears to be a folder called Users, under that are two folders Default and Public, under those are several more folders with names that I think I recognize. The folders under Default look a lot like what I might find under Documents and Settings on an XP machine but most of them are empty. The folders under Public look more like what I would expect to find shared. Some of these folders do have files in them.
If I try to copy a file from the XP machine to the Windows 7 machine into the My Videos folder under Default, I get the "Cannot copy filename: Access is denied" error message. This is true for any of the folders under Default. I can copy the file to Videos under Public and it does appear there when I view the folder from XP (and it really is there on the Windows 7 machine). This works well enough for what I need to do, but I'd like to better understand how this all works. If the folders under Default are not shared, why are they showing up over the network. If they are shared, why can't I copy to them.
Meanwhile if I am working from the Windows 7 machine and I copy a file from the XP machine, as I said, that works fine. But if I then return to the XP machine and look at the folders on the Windows 7 machine, I can't see the file on the Windows 7 machine even though I know it is there. (I suspect this has something to do with the fact that I think in terms of folders in a normal tree, but Windows 7 seems to ignore the tree to create something it calls a Library.)
One more piece of confustion -- If I am on the Windows 7 machine and look at it in the network, I see the User folder with two folders under it, one is Public just like what I see looking from the XP machine, but the other is not Default, instead it is named with the user name of the only user on the Windows 7 machine.
As I said earlier, I can manage to do what I need to do for right now (the Windows 7 box is only being used as a video server for my HDTV) but I'd like to better understand what I'm seeing.
