WIFI Internet - Internal works, external doesn't

    Morning all

I've googled this and found heaps of people having the same issue, but nothing that actually resolves it. I'm using a laptop with internal wifi but I also have an external wifi dongle as I connect to my neighbours internet (I have permission and the passwords, etc). Both the internal and external used to work fine and both would have internet connection. But something recently has changed and now the internal wifi still works with both network and internet connection, but the external one only has network connection and no internet connection.

The reason I use the external one is it gives much better signal strength than the internal one and, as said, both used to work just fine.

Now I've tried uninstalling the external drivers and dongle and reinstalling it but no dice. I've tried doing the netsh stuff people have recommended in some of the search pages but no dice. Tried release and renew of IP, but no dice. I've disabled all firewalls but no dice (and I figure the firewalls would stop both connections anyway but I thought I'd try it)

My internal card uses Atheros drivers and my external uses the Ralink drivers (I'm going from memory now as it's at home and I'm now at work). Both have IPs to the network, everything looks similar for both when you do an ipconfig /all.

Does anyone know how to fix it and the low signal strength of my internal wifi to get internet is rather flakey unless I stand outside their home (they've offered to set me up a chair, LOL). As said, the external one gives good signal strength and I connect to the network, just not internet, so I'm taking that the card is still working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been annoying me for a while now.

    Thanks!

Have you tried taking your laptop to their house and connecting with your internal card? There might not be anything wrong with your computer - it might be something on their end that's preventing you from accessing the internet.

My internal wifi connects just fine - get network and internet. It's the external one that wont connect to the internet (it gets network). Even when I'm in their house, I don't get internet using my external wifi.

What make/model external wifi do you have?

Its a comfast one which has "n" access as well, but I don't have more info than that at the moment as I'm at work - sorry. It uses the ralink drivers. It always worked previously and has only just stopped connecting to the internet. As said, connects to network fine, just no internet. It sees all the other wireless connections in the area but I can't connect to them as they are secure and I don't know the passwords.

When you get home, post the make and model of the external wifi and I'll do some research on it and see if I can come up with a possible fix (or at least a reason why it's failing). Also, let us know the make/model of your neighbor's wifi router/access point.

Hi there - home early as keen to see if can get this resolved.

Its a Comfast wireless-N USB adapter model CWUSB150N. This is what device manager says:

Device description: 802.11 USB Wireless LAN Card
    Hardware ID: USB\VID_148F&PID_3070&REV_0101
    Manufacturer: Ralink Technology, Corp.

Is this enough? The driver I use is called version 12.0.0.49974 from Macrovision (28Mb). If there's anything else you need, just holler.

    Thanks again

OMG! I solved it. I did a search on the model number and found it was using the RT307x chip set. I went to Ralink website and found that they had done a new driver for this chip set only a few months ago. I downloaded it, overwrote the driver I had (I didn't even uninstall and reinstall but overwrote it), it had a think, did it and then I connected AND GOT INTERNET! Right now my internal wifi is turned off and I'm 100% connected by my external wifi. Wonderful. Maybe Ralink knew of a change coming with Windows 7 or something and the new driver fixes it, I dunno, but the one I had from 2009 which has worked all this time now no longer doesn't but the 2011 one does. Fantastic!
