The easiest is to use the same username and password on both. Disable Simple File Sharing, and then share out a drive or folder. You should be able to access them by \\computername\sharedfoldername.

set up a home group. open a window and on the left click the homegroup heading this will take you to the page to set up a homegroup. then on the laptop do the same but this time " join " a homegroup. the one you will have set up on the desktop.

If you have no networking experience, then follow boohbah's link. I'm not sure what you mean by "how will the files be shared". Are your computers connected to a router that shares your internet connection? If not, how are they connected to the internet?

If they are both going through the same router, they are both on the same network, so the guide linked above should work fine.

    Hi

In the 'Network and Sharing Centre' what type of Network do you see? If you are using HomeGroup, the type should be 'Home'. If you are using User name and Password, the type should be 'Work'. Also can you confirm that you have a user with the same name and password on both machines?

    Let us know please.
