Ping spikes in Windows 7 ! ( online games )

Welcome ;-)

I have a big problem with the spikes ping. Without the game Urban Terror I have a great ping -> 10-20ms. I turn on Urban Terror and the game will come in to play online to have spikes ping 10-50-100-150-200ms :S It's very warping.

Ingame Urban Terror:

In both examples above you are just pinging your router. it not any way close to a real world test, could you tell us more abt your networking setup and why you think these are excessive ping time given that the highest is 98ms.

having the same problems myself. (and as it happens, this is with Urban Terror too!)
Had this XP machine using a Core2 chip. Internet connection is via 20/20 verizon FIOS. Avg ping to nearby servers varies between 7ms and 20ms, depending on the time of day. Connection has been smooth as silk since I switched over from DSL (which was almost as good).

Upgraded the machine by doing a motherboard/cpu/ram swap... (Microcenter had the Core i7 860 for $229, so I jumped on that + the awesome Asus Maximus III GENE board). I left the OS install mostly intact. I let XP auto-detect hardware & install drivers off of the Asus CD. It went surprisingly smooth... Fire up teamspeak + urban terror... everything ran great! no issues... just like before, but even higher framerates!

Then did an "in-place" Windows 7 upgrade. ie: let it replace my windows folder (where it moved that & all my Program Files contents to c:\windows.old. Re-installed drivers as needed, this time the x64 flavor (XP was just 32-bit). So far, Urban Terror runs great except for these random network spikes!

I'd like to trace it using either Wireshark (which I've heard doesn't work on Win7 x64 yet) and/or using the SysInternals procmon... which would likely generate a HUGE amount of log data... might be hard to identify what's causing the spikes, but probably the best tool.

Thoughts?

I doubt you'd see anything signficant in ProcMon, and even a packet trace would probably fail to reveal the nature of the slowdowns - just the fact that it's slower than expected.

Do you know whether the game actually has a kernel-mode driver? Perhaps some sort of anti-piracy mechanism?

fixed?

not 100% certain yet, but I pulled an Intel Pro 1000/PT NIC out of another box and put it in here... so far, no lag! it's a PCIe card using the built-in Windows 7 drivers, all of the default advanced options.

The case is also, at the moment, open... so if the issue comes back after I close 'er up, then I'll look into temperature issues.

Ping spikes
Recently I've started getting these big ping spikes whilst online gaming making them kinda pointless to play cos I'd get temporary 'Connection Interrupted' errors and such. My setup hasn't changed and I've never had this problem before so I'm hoping it's a software issue or some pretty well hidden...
