    I did run it yea.....

I can't even blame BitDefender now, cos I am running Avast. I have re-tried the things I tried last time plus I also uninstalled the driver Windows assigned to my wireless network adaptor and installed the driver from the manufacturers site - just in case.

I am just gonna leave it now, everything else is fine and I can live without it anyway I think? It would be nice to have but....
I will have to think about this some more. Sounds silly, but try MSE

I am glad you are OK, was it bad by you then?
    To paraphrase an earlier message:
We were on the outskirts here. 3"rain, winds steady at 25 gusting to 40, lost power for 13hours from 5am to 6pm yesterday due to trees on wires.

We have two to cleanup, and after I finish here that is were I will be. Will check back later today.
One member Northwest of New York City had 8" rain no power or water for 10hrs trees all over the place.

Well, I gotta go, I will check back later.

Also, I tried MSE before I did the fresh Windows install.

stonebear, how is your situation? You mentioned your problem is the wireless.

Have you tried un-installing the device drivers, and then upon a restart allowing the OS to install the device drivers?

Keep an eye-out for Katia it is supposed to swing over to the U.K. with hurricane force winds on Monday into Tuesday.

So far as I write this, we have 7" of rain from T.S. Lee, and the NWS is calling for another 6 to 8".
Won't see the Sun until Saturday afternoon.

If you remember all the way back to the beginning of the saga, that was one of the first things I tried. I don't actually have a wireless problem, I thought I did and that is how I found out about the diagnostic policy problem.

I hope Katia leaves us alone! :)

Your right, I suggested it back in post #3, and you confirmed in post #4,

My apologies, I must have had a brain freeze

As for Katia you might get some moderate winds, but nothing too drastic.

The weather seems to be getting cold and windy today, I live on the west coast of England so it might be the fringes of it.

Cold and windy are not unusual for here though so hard to tell atm. :)

    Still thinking about your thread.......

If you have the time take a look at this thread:
The Diagnostic Service Host service failed to start due to the following error
This link takes you to the same link I offered in post #15 (diagnostic service host grayed out).
It starts to get interesting at the sixth post down by Petr Kadlec, and I quote:
If you take a look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WdiServiceHost\RequiredPrivileges, you'll see that the service requires (among others) the SeSystemProfilePrivilege privilege, but LocalService, which it is running under, does not have this privilege (at least on my computer in our company domain).

I have resolved this by granting SeSystemProfilePrivilege to the LocalService account (because I was not allowed to use the Local Security Policy applet, I used ntrights.exe from the Windows Resource Kit). It seems to work fine at the moment, but I am afraid the privilege is going to be removed automatically tomorrow when syncing data from the domain...
There are other posts there, but the ones by twgage, Hbosch, and Rob-W look promising.

I have it, (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WdiServiceHost\RequiredPrivileges\SeSystemProf ilePrivilege privilege (among others)),
but with my Home Premium I can not do any Group Policy Editing. Maybe that is for the best.

There is also this thread: Event 7000 - The Diagnostic Service Host service failed to start due to the following error: A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. where Mark Goldhamer (last post) says:
this is related to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment \ Profile System Performance
Which then leads to Event 1202 with status 0x534 logged on Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers after modifying security policy.

So it seems to me that WdiServiceHost, Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights Assignment, and the Profile System have a lot to do with the DPS.

I looked over your thread , and I did not see a suggestion to try a new User Account with Admin privileges User Account - Create You might want to give that a go.

    Still thinking.......

Thanks Anak and sorry I haven't been around to reply sooner. :)

I will have a look at those links when my brain is working a bit better - but it does sound similar to a route I followed myself, (to do with user rights etc). I am inclined to leave it for now as it isn't causing any problems but it will bug me again one day soon. I just got my first smartphone so I am playing about with that atm, lol.

I think I have Admin privileges anyway, being the only account on Windows Ultimate?

Not a problem, I have been known to step away for up to a day or so before I returned, we will be here when you get back.

Hopefully you will not have any networking problems with your new smartphone.

If you are unsure you can always try the Built-in-Administrator Account .
