Windows 7: how to build fastest network

how to build fastest network

i have windows 7 64 running on two computers.

originally i had my desktop connected to a wireless adapter, and N150 one, and my laptop with it's N150 integrated card, connected to my 300N router.

I was getting 1.3MBps data transfer between the two. On video streaming i would get hiccups often enough which didn't last that long.

Then, moved my router and modem, connected my desktop to my router hardwire, and that improved transfer rate to 4MBps, to me, this is acceptable, but i feel maybe i could get a faster connection. there is likely alot of interference here from many sorts of wireless devices. The downside is that my video streams quite well and fast more smooth and fast for changing video clip, but after a while it gets stuck in a long pause.

i tried the wireless N150 in my laptop to see what happens, i got slowed back to 1.3MBps.

so, i went to see if a N300 adapter might give me a faster connection since my bottleneck must be the laptop i'm thinking. windows says i'm only connected at 150mbps, not 300, and my transfer rate has slowed to 1.3MBps again.

So i'm starting to think that USB connected wireless cards no matter what the specs, can't do much better than that. is that true, or does the USB key just suck and i should get faster than that?

other than hardwiring my laptop, is there anything i could do to improve my performance? do some routers do a better job of routing streaming, and that could improve my transfer?

another solution for me might be to put my user account media files on a network hard drive, which would be cool, but is it ok if my downloads folder is on my network hard drive? my files will transfer much faster than my internet downloads, but will it slow me down crazy to have the info run through my laptop and send to my network drive? or would it just send the incoming information straight to my network drive from the router?
