Windows 7: Can't disable homegroup

Can't disable homegroup

(I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium). I thought I had disabled the home group, but I still see it in Explorer which I find annoying. So I look in the Network and Sharing center and I see that after "Homegroup:" it says "Joined" (which I don't want). So I try to fix this by clicking on "Choose homegroup and sharing options", but this does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!. So I tried re-enabling the Homegroup provider and listener services and rebooted. It now shows these services as started. However clicking on that menu still does nothing and it still says "Joined". Also if I click on "Joined" which appears to be a link, it also does absolutely nothing. Also after "View your active networks" there is a link that says "Connect or disconnect". If I click on that it just brings up a window that shows my current internet connection, but it doesn't give me any opportunity to leave the homegroup. Also I don't see homegroup as one of my control panel applets. (I have disabled some of the control panel applets that I wasn't using, so possibly I disabled the homegroup applet. Unfortunately I can't remember how I disabled these applets so I don't know how to reverse that. Seems to be quite difficult).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

~Paul

Hi Paul

Do you have network type set to Home or Work?

If Home, it will expect a HomeGroup to be set up. Change your network type to Work and this should sort the problem.

Network Location - Set as Home, Work, or Public Network

Hi. Thanks for your very fast response. Indeed I had the network type set to Home. I changed it to Work as you suggested. Now it no longer shows that I am joined to a homegroup (as desired). However I still see homegroup showing up in Explorer. I read that if you disable the homegroup it should no longer show in Explorer. I tried disabling the homegroup provider and listener services again and rebooted, but the homegroup still shows up. Just annoying enough I'm willing to ask on more time about this.

Thanks.

Hello Paul,

The tutorial below can help show you how to remove Homegroup from the navigation pane in Windows Explore. However, it will not unjoin (leave) you from a Homegroup.

Homegroup - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Shawn. Worked like a charm!

Wow, that was cryptic. It's amazing someone managed to figure that out.
